You've just travelled 180 miles to find out the bait shop has changed it's hours. You will not be fishing eels tonight. What's the first lure you reach for to nail stripers from the beach at night?
As always, thanks.

I would reach for old faitful. 2oz. buck tail with a curltail or pork ryne. If that don't work black bommers are next on the list.

It would depend on the depth of the water I'm fishing. Like stated above....if I'm fishing deeeep water.....gimme my Smilin' Bill, if I'm fishin 10-15' ....a perrty swimmer, or needle...:D

If its in the spring I'll hit the herring run and grab up some herring and chunk or liveline them (if they stay alive but I am getting a new livewell soo that won't be a problem this season :D ) In the spring I don't even bother with eels herring is the ticket to big fish! But in the summer I gotta switch to eels and fish only at night in RI.

Now a lure, Black bomber, Bucktail with eel rind sometimes even poppers depending on the moon, surf conditions and depth.

What's a lure? Yeah I own some, but I'd grab an oversized 7 inch split tail or maybe the 9" Big Jerk. If from shore and relatively shallow water, I'd fish them weightless and slow with long pauses. I might even push a few glass rattles inside before I start just to help mamma hone in on her favorite meal :). If its a little deeper then I'd use a weighted hook and work it on or near the bottom.

If the fish are in close---a 9" Sluggo rigged point down on an 8/0 heavy hook (Siwash or O'Shaugnessey). Black/silver, Arkansas Shiner or Red Shad color.

If they're a little farther out---black/purple or olive/silver needlefish. Or pink/white on a moonlit night.

Rigged eels All made up and frozen the winter before) . Black or pearl bomber depending on light level assuming I could cast it. Black and white contrast teaser with either. Needlefish (same colors) would be good too. If really bad out , a jig with the teasers. Oh yeah , don't forget to tie the skin on them! :)(Hey , he said you couldn't buy eels that night. Doesn't mean you don't have a half dozen rigged eels in the freezer or skins in the frig already!)
