what would be a good blank to build a sluggo rod on?i would like it to be 9 ft and wraped conventional.thanks snake

ive been using an allstar 1088 (9foot) and a lamiglass gsb1201-L cut 4 inches off the tip (9-6) for nights when i am solely throwing sluggos...

the 1201 launches them to the moon, but its a tad light if your hauling bass up rocks.. the 1088 is a real powerhouse so i alternate depending on where i decide to go..

this is just me though someone might chime in with a better suggestion :huh:

nebe ive got a 1201-m uncut thats a great eel rod to me it seams heavy for sluggos but i havent tried it yet

ahhh read agian, i said 1201-L its a completely different animal...

much lighter, and throws small stuff all day long. perfect for an Abu 6500.

in some spots i fish, i use a SB1213m which is a thick glass meatstick.. believe it or not, that can really wing a sluggo out there, but its alot of rod to make that sluggo dance.. all that weight hurts the wrists after a while..

ok now i got ya ive never felt a 1201-L.i bought a glass rod that joe had for sale i love the slow action of glass when casting.fibreglass and conventionals go together like beer and pretzels.

anyway, i love the 1201-L.. IMO, its the best rod out there for throwing dannies and sluggos... but it lacks the balls to winch bass up rocks and over bubbleweed at low tide. the 1088 can do it all, but its a really fast blank.

Snake, you like the 120 M for eels?? I hate mine for slinging snakes. I keep ripping them of the hook. I guess I need to find me some bigger eels to load that rod up. The rod is built as a spinning rod though, not too sure how much of a difference a conventional would make though.

tpoliti i love my 1201-m for throwing snakes. i like eels about 14 inches long that blank can handle big eels.i hook them threw the bottom of the jaw and out 1 of the eye sockets i dont cast off many.iam no expert just my 2 cents

Snake, I hook em the same way. I used the rod one with eels and ended up with set of lips on the hook, LOL. I have since switched to my 132 L and have had much more success with it. I have a 120 L and am gonna build that and see how it goes.

i bet you were using octopus hooks.. use live bait hooks with a thicker shank and you wont tear the eels mouths as much.

Nebe, you are correct. I do use octopus hooks. Have to try live bait hooks. I have also read somewhere that one of the Surf Guides on LI uses tuna hooks because the have a larger barb. I've been comtemplating that as well.

yeah, octopus-style hooks due to their thin wire tend to have eels cast off. i never use them. i use thicker wired hooks, like live bait. much better.

sluggo rod - snake, the 1201m can do it, but you better have a educated thumb, especially in the wind. the 1201L may be a nice alternative for that purpose. i wouldn't push more than 3oz with that rod and even then i may stop at 2.5oz. you may want a blank with a little faster action too and slightly shorter than 10'. i have some ideas if you want, shoot me an email/pm.

you better catch a "30"+ on that 1201m and send me some pictures!

Look over the Lami CSB series blanks. They have some umf but maintain the moderate action more do to the composite material used.

Couldnt agree more - I'm going retro - redoing two 9 foot fiberglass rods my father in law gave me. The action one these pups is sweet. They will be use for the light stuff - 2oz or less. Got Fishers & Lamis for the big wood.

I've been throwing slug-gos ala McKenna's style this season. I started off using a conventional, but didn't like the feel of it. I switched over to my 9' spinner, and the results improved dramatically. I have been using a Lami 1081mh with a Saltiga 4500. SWEET combo. Landed several 30#+ already on it this season. I think that fishing the slug-go properly just about requires the use of spinning gear.

I usually throw sluggos on my allstar 1145 spinner and it handles them great. The rainshadow 1088 throws them alittle better and is more comfortable to work them with (I fish them sidearm and it wears on the shoulders) but is alittle to light for the area I usually fish. If I fish them from the sand, I'd use the 1088.

I know it is not a blank but I've been using a G Loomis SUR1142S (9'6" rod) for a couple of years now with 9" Slug-Go's and weighted 7" Fin-S-Fish and it handles them very well. Also throws up to 2 ounce wooden swimmers nicely and has surprising power for landing nice fish.
