View Full Version : Entertainment on the beach, and Victory
Slipknot 09-26-2005, 04:58 PM This weekend I went camping down the cape with my 2 brothers, their 2 sons and my son. The 3 boys are close in age 1 year apart and I like to take them out fishing if I have the chance . So we all pile into my pickup and head to the beach and drive and drive and drive some more till we get past the seemingly endless mung :yak: Finally we see it clearing a little and it looks fishable, other surfcasters are lining the beach and I see an opening and happen to pull up next to Rappin Mikey :) He is with his bud who is a striper virgin fisherman and popped his cherry with his first keeper before we arrived. So everyone is soaking sandeels and Mikey's bud is getting all the fish it seems. He set me up with some bait a a sinker so I set out a rod and plugged a popper too. It was about 5-5:30 in the afternoon and Mikey starts to get some fish too. Well he lands a few but the next one gets the attention of one of the marauding seals torturing us out there and he pops his head up with a 30 something inch bass dangling out of his mouth by the tail as if to show off his prize, at that moment another seal tries to steal the bass from the other seal and you should have seen the explosions in the water from those 2 horsehead seals :) we all got quite a show. The bass is still hooked so rather than lose his line, Mikey palms the spool and breaks him off. He says that's his 5th bass lost to a seal this year :crying:
So he rebaits and sets out again, they each land some fish and in the meantime I am casting poppers off a seals head :D
Mikey sets up on another fish and he is reeling it in and now a seal is in hot pursuit so the fish zigs and zags and Mikey reels like hell and just gets it away in the nick of time. Success :bgi: He gets that one away from the seals and the people on the beach start applauding Mikey and cheer for his victory. :btu:
I wish I had a video camera.
Good job Mikey !!!
Flaptail 09-26-2005, 05:26 PM Slip, A gun would have been much better to have than a camera. Or, better yet a camera and a gun! I was on the beach Friday evening at about five pm and found a herd down to you know where I like to fish. I was doing well on Dannys and watching the outer state trucks roar up and down past me and they never caught on. Did well till at dusk it went heavy east and the water got dirty. Had one seal come close but I showered the bastage with rocks and driftwood! He left but the fish did too. Hey, I even got a couple on 2 oz. canal jigs with a sluggo when the wind came up before it got dirty! by 8:00pm I was asleep at the wheel and woke up to drive off and go home at midnight with the beach munged and wind roaring. What a difference a couple hours can make. WOMR 92.1 in P-Town was palying a ton of classic Led Zep, it was awesome! :rotf3:
Slipknot 09-26-2005, 05:42 PM I was out Friday night on the beach with popper john and his friend, but I wish he got out there alot earlier. Met him around 9:20 at the entrance and first cast had a 41" bass on a Bassmaster needle, got another then the water got too low and the fish moved off and like you said, wind started to dirty the water, we found a pocket here and there and plucked some more.
Have you seen Big Ed yet?
I don't think guns are allowed out on that beach :realmad: oh well
How about we liveline some tainted fish to those rotten criminals of sea.
RickBomba 09-26-2005, 05:46 PM I don't know about your experience with him, but for me, Mikey+Beach always=Entertainment.
Hence the equation.
M+Ba=E
Later,
Rick
PS-Last year the same thing happened, and he was convinced it was a tuna! :rotf3:
Rappin Mikey 09-26-2005, 08:11 PM I hate them seals!!!! Lost a couple nice plugs to them this year. I don't think I ever mistaken one for a tuna though???? Ricky, you been drinking again??
so what kind of tackle would one need to land a seal or at least get him into the wash so one could cut the leader ????
Slipknot 09-26-2005, 09:11 PM I just about landed one 4 years ago on my 1088 sabre and a nautil 6500 with 14 lb fireline. but it was a harbor seal not a huge horsehead seal. Once I saw the thing come up for air, I opened the bail and let it have slack to dislodge the plug from it's face. T.S. landed one I think.
How are you gonna get close enough to it to cut the leader, you'd be nuts to get that close. They'll bite ya whole dam arm off if they want to.
I hate them too.
never a dull moment when Mikey is around :D
Flaptail 09-27-2005, 05:18 AM LaPorte landed a little one that ate a Gold/Black Basmaster Needle at Herring Covelate last year. It was the first week of November and we had some bass still there. I had my knife out and was going for the throat and LaPorte stopped me. The damm thing was too cute I guess. Just a little feller. We got the hook out ( barbless) and he got away clean. I could skinned him like the Woodchucks I used to shoot on the farm when I was a kid. Could had me a skin on the back of the house. Oh well, guess it's better this way. :(
vineyardblues 09-27-2005, 11:01 AM Nasty diry seals
I was watching a special on them and they said that they are one of the most "virus/dirty/and dangerous" animals that could do harm to people on beaches. my Best guess is that they do not brush their teeth.
I could not belive how close people swim to them on the cape? Or shall I say how many damm seals were on the beaches around Monomoy island.
You would not see me letting my kids any place close to them. Bastages

Karl F 09-27-2005, 11:12 AM But VB.. they produce the cods favorite staple..... :rollem:
have not been able to eat cod since a marine bioligist told me that last spring.....
flounders, fluke and even the lowly sand dab, all but wiped out by these swimming rats, they are now targeting schoolie and larger bass, and even bluefish.
and yes. a seals mouth holds the most nasty vile concoction, never allow yourself near enough to get bitten.
I keep wondering why they are sooo protected.... bring back the bounty.
bassmaster 09-27-2005, 11:34 AM can i have my needles back?
i have none
