I've got a major birthday coming up and my wife has been hounding me for a gift idea. I really don't need anything but I've been thinking about a Jet Mini Lathe to replace my crappy old Shopcraft lathe. What are your opinions on these? I see there are at least a couple of different models available - variable speed and belt-selected. Other than the higher price, are there any disadvantages to the variable speed model?

gadabout, have you ever looked at the penn state industries turner craft pro lathe? i believe that it is the same lathe as the jet lathe, but just a different color, and the cost is about half of the jet. since this is a major birthday for you, you might want to consider that lathe, and then give her the hint for some other goodies that you might need like new turning tools, a band saw, drill press, etc.
maybe some others can chime in and answer your questions about the pros of variable speed, etc.

Yes, I did see a post somewhere about that Penn State Industries lathe. If I can confirm that it is really the same product, that would be a good deal. New turning tools... Hmmm Great idea!

Ed,
They look the same in pictures, but I have not seen either one in the flesh yet. I still have some time before I need to decide. I almost wish I didn't have to make the choice. On the one hand, I like the idea of getting the lower price, but if I later found out that it was not really the same, I would be unhappy with it.

The turncrafter pro is a great machine. I have a VS Jet and have used the Turncrafter. If you cannot get close to the Turncrafter price with the Jet buy the turncrafter.
Call Penn State Ind. and find out if they have parts for the TC. If yes buy it!! With the Jet you have to order parts from Jet USA in Cali. and they are slow!!
