I'll never forget the blitz of blues I hit on the Vineyard a few years back. They hit on every cast for the entire dropping tide, off East Beach, from Wasque to Dike Bridge. Every freakin' fish was over 13 lbs. The biggest I had was 17 and change and it's the only fish I ever hooked that bottomed out my 3M Lami S-glass. There were two fish landed that almost hit 20. I kept at them after dark with darters. Next morning, I was so stiff I could hardly get out of bed.

And, as my luck usually has it, this was the day after the Derby ended with a 14 topping the shore leader board  :bc:

But, then again, this happened while the beach was almost empty cause everyone went to the awards ceremony. :D

I'm not a big fan of the yellow eyed razor toothed bastages, but they earned my respect that day. These fish were big, mean, they had the feedbag on, and East Beach has just enough current to make things interesting.

Yep , what BM said.

One year , I would guess it was about 1987 or so , the weekend after Thanksgiving along a RI beach , we caught truly big bluefish.

I usually throw bluefish back but kept a couple that day. We gutted them on the beach and took home the fish. At home , after gutting , they weighed in at 22 to 23 pounds.

This wasn't a couple of big one out of many small ones . They were all about the same size and it lasted the whole weekend like that.

I cant imagine.. occasionaly one would break and all you would hear was a very loud snapping sound as they were chomping bait fish.

had i kept one i would be winning my club's bluefish shore division trophy, but I hate them so much i couldnt be bothered :hihi:

I always wondered why they were so big but especially puzzling was why so late in the year. Last few days of November!

We used to hit them at South Cape Beach almost to Thanksgiving.

One year it snowed on Veteran's Day weekend while we were on the Vineyard, and we had monster blues at Menemsha the day after the storm.
