View Full Version : Do we practice what we preach?
Johnny C 10-10-2005, 12:01 PM I walked a ton of beach this weekend and had some time to think as I saw all of the trash and crap left behind.
Everyone (most everyone) agrees that in order to keep access open at popular spots we must respect the areas. However I noticed beer cans that had to be 10 yrs old in the bushes at WH. You could tell that Budwiser has not had that type of label and can type in years.
The Lighthouse is gross. Bottom line. Does everyone here who talks about the pigs out there pick up after them or do you walk on past because "its not my trash". I saw a years worth of comedy in an hour at WH last Saturday afternoon.
1. 1 asain guy in sneekers fishing 4 chunk rigs over 25 yards of rocks...
2. 2 kids humping in the rain in broad daylight. I had to wait so the girl could pull up her pants.
3. A "weekapaug Surfcaster" in sneekers almost fell right on his a..
anyway... is anyone interested in a massive clean up effort? Maybe one day for a few hours in the next few weekends? WE could devide up and meet in a location... we could even talk to some of the shop owners to get a larger group together. Who cares whos trash it is, we will all be crying in our waders when they powers at be shut us out.
SAXATILUS 10-10-2005, 12:32 PM I always carry a trash bag in my pack and make and effort to pick up others S**T on my way out. Unfourtunatley we will never be able to stop the lack of respect by others, for every one guy that picks up trash you have ten leaving it behind, it's a loosing battle but I will keep on doing what I can. I am not saying there all bad, in fact I know there not, but saw quite a bit of crap this weekend from guys with out-of-state plates.
doyle007 10-10-2005, 01:39 PM i do pick up a lot of garbage when i'm out. i taught my three year old daughter this summer that when we're out swimming, we pick up any trash that we see float by. this pertains mostly to plastic bags and labels, since sea turtles seem to eat this stuff, thinking that it's jellyfish. every time that we pick up trash, she says that we just saved a turtle and a dolphin, and smiles from ear to ear. she's also great on the beach yelling at people that leave trash when they decide to leave for a day. it's amazing how many people will get up, pack up their towels and chairs, and leave a dozen cigarette butts and some cups in the sand. my little trash nazi lets them have it, using her three year old "outside" voice. it's hard not to look like an ass when a three year old girl in a disney bathing suit is giving you the business about leaving trash on the beach.
as for me, i wear a semi-dry top in the surf, and it has a big pouch on the front. this weekend i picked up three balloons, and lots of plastic labels that were either floating or recently washed up. i hit a jetty, and noticed lots of beer cans, bait wrappers, and an old chair. they were all thrown down into a crevice between two rocks. i did not pick them up, since the waves were really washing over the jetty pretty steadily. it's funny though that there is a certain ethnicity that is always fishing from this exact spot. i recently programmed a local F&G warden's number into my phone, so he'll get a call next time i see these so called "sportsmen".
i also get my blood to boil every time a see a smoker throw a cigarette butt out the window of their car. god forbid they put a butt in their ashtray.
Rappin Mikey 10-10-2005, 02:54 PM It's bad karma to litter. The fish gods will punish you! They award however when you anti-litter.

basswipe 10-10-2005, 04:15 PM I live right on a beach that has a half dozen garbage cans.I fish this place at least twice a week and I fill a Stop&Shop bag everytime.
bloocrab 10-11-2005, 11:01 AM ...i taught my three year old daughter this summer that when we're out swimming, we pick up any trash that we see float by...
You want to be careful teaching someone that young on picking up trash. Around my parts, you will find syringes as well as used protection...errrr...rubbas. Not off-topic, just a word of advice.
Redsoxticket 10-11-2005, 01:36 PM If there was a clean up at any location then someone should inform the people that have influence regarding our efforts such as town officials, DEM, CMRC, etc
This will give them the signal that fishermen are OK, however it nay also back fire. What do you think?
