I currently fish w/a 10' Tsunami spinner (2 pc) which I really like. I am thinking about getting a custom 9' one piece. My biggest concern is distance. Does anyone think a GOOD 9' would let me get the distance I currently get w/a 10'? And don't tell me "distance doesn't matter" most times it doesn't. BUT there are times it does, and as I like to use one rod all the time, it matters to me. The lightest I throw is about 1.5 oz up to a little over 3.

Thanks for the insight.

i use a production lami arra 1084 with a 706z and I can't complain one bit about the distance. I seem to cast just as far as everyone else, sometimes better.

All Star 1088, Nautil 7500, 50#PP really throws long. 2-1/4 polaris is perfect. The rod does not like working pencils - too stiff - stick with polaris, needles.

Rainshadow 1088 is a good all around beach rod. 1-4
tosses bombers to big wood to eels.

I'd second the 1088, but it's a bit light for around the rocks in Rhody; the 1089 however kicks butt...

Whoops, I meant Batson SU1088 above...about the same as the All Star 1088 and probably close to the SW1089.

Really fast action, but you can crank on the big plugs...nice for jigging as well.

For a "non-custom" rod I fish a St. Croix Avid Surf 9' rod and it casts with 50 LB Power Pro great in that 1.5 oz to 3 oz range

One of the often-overlooked 9 footers is the Loomis SUR 1084S. One piece, rated 1-4 oz. Mike cc built me a sweet conventional custom on the blank that Loomis uses for the finished rod.

I have a factory Loomis sur1084 (spinner) and it is a nice rod. I get very good distance with 20# fireline and a well-casting plug like a 2-3/8 oz superstrike littleneck or a Habs needle. Dont know if its "as good" as a 10 footer though. It may be in the lighter range than the 1.5 to 4 you are looking for, I don't trust it much over three, but it is good for jigs as low a 1/2-OZ too, and has a nice backbone. Also fits perfecly inside a Honda accord. The sur965 is my next rod :humpty:

what toonoc said. i have the same rod and throw 3 oz all the time with it.(its only rated up to 3 BTW). i really like the rod a lot but i find its too light for the rocks. loomis changed the price of their "expedite" deal too which is a bummer....
