In my shop....I got one from a buddy but it has a bit of exterior rust on it...how best to restore the exterior? Steel wool and Rustoleum? Any help would be appreciated. :cool:

Larry try a wire brush, or one you could put in a drill.

They do make a paint fror stoves. I think it called stove pipe black.

The only thing is the first time you use it stinks like hell.

You could check the marine store for rust-lok after you rust bust -- it will keep it from coming back -- its silver paint that makes you look like the tin man when you drip it on yourself and cant get it off. Not sure how it holds up under heat. you can then paint over it with your rustoleum. But I would definitely rust bust with rust-lock marine metal prep, its a clearish blue, turns rust into...i dunno, but not rust anymore, so it wont spread. I'd sand or wool off the bulk of the rust, spray the prep, wool, spray again and wipe, then do whatever painting. it worked on my old car, as well as on the boat i worked on.

...and good luck with a wood stove. may you not see your breath in the winter, and may your toes not turn black with frostbite.

High heat paint, totally. Do not do anything else. A woodstove can easily hit 1200F Eben would know the best as he deals with heat all the time

they even make spray-on high heat paint...quick and easy

been heating with wood, or living in a house heated with wood, almost my whole life.
wire wheel, or wire brush real good, High Heat Stove Paint, you can even get it in almost any color, thru a wood stove shop, then low fire on first burn, well ventilated, 'cause like has been said, it's gonna stink the first fire,might even have that burnt paint smell, but not as bad, on the next couple of burns.

As posted above it stinks . Try to do the first burn or two outside before installation if possible. Thanks for reminding me I got to clean out my wood stove and pellet stove soon. Paul

I put stove black on my stove after steel wooling it. If its an older stove you may not get all the rust off, but the stove black will keep it black for the season. I have my four plus cords outside ready to go. If you need any help let me know.
