Are those windows fixed or do they open? Just curious.

BigFish

The windows are fixed Bob...being over my lathe bench they are just for light....opening them would only blow dust around when turning. Other windows will open for ventilation.

Gonefishintalk....wood stove is going on the other side complete with a brick hearth....this will be a real showplace when I finish...and functional!

is the commercial grade 6-burner stove going that someone is going to be cooking marinara sauce on, or corn beef brisket for all of us during the wood turning open house sessions? Even more impotently is how big a fridge for the beer is there going to be? Don't tell me outside around back. Where are the girls from Hooters going to change from thier street clothes to those cute little outfits, in front of us? That would be O.K. with me, but they might object. What about the stadium seating I heard about? I thought you picked up used seats from the Randolph cinema.

did you build that shed from scratch? i was looking at the sheds at home depot and wondering if i'd be better of just building from scratch.

BigFish
10-28-2005, 03:56 PM
No Mike just refurbing what is already there with new exterior...studs where needed, windows and such to make it brighter inside....other than the roof basically the entire thing will be new by the time I am done! Inside will be insulated, finished with a wood stove and lots of room to work and as Afterhours said...maybe a pickle barrel with a checker board to play on for when compny' comes a callin'! :hihi:

Those multiple windows seem like they will restrict the view to the outdoors along with collecting saw dust on the sills of each individual window pane.
Vinyl replacement windows are maintenance free and easier to clean.

Lots of happiness on your BF plug factory and your new home.

BigFish
11-01-2005, 01:06 AM
I don't do anything without thinking about it...and then thinking about it some more. I have a certain look I was going for in my shop....so it has some visual character and also some function.....those windows do not open....don't need or want them to because the dust will be blown everywhere so I put fixed sash's in....other windows will open but those two I did not want them to....I like lots of panes as it has more personality and a kind of "dated" look. They also offer lots of light in that area....I could have gone with some insulated, vinyl windows but I am putting form ahead of function for the sake of enjoyment....I also could have gone with vinyl siding instead of painting but then that would be boring to look at in my mind. I am just trying to create as I go to make something unique, fun and functional as best I can. Interior walls could be a quick inexpensive plywood or rock but due to the fact that the shop will be heated part time by a wood stove, and pretty damp in the winter when not heated I thought rock would be a mistake.....rough sawn pine perhaps installed vertically might be nice...more work but alot nicer. As for dust? There is going to be dust no matter what I do with the window sills.

Larry;
Stay away from rough sawn baords for the interier. You cannot get the dust out of them! I would use one side good plywood!! Some thing that will hold lots of screws and nails for hanging stuff!

Also a little 4.1 cu.ft. fridge ($149) at Wally world. :buds:

Hey Larry -- :btu: just blow the dust off the panes with the compressor once in a while. Going to put the compressor in a outside room or isolate it inside. I put my compressor in a a-joing shed area and find it a pain in the butt to adjust the pressure. Got to get the controlls inside the cave.
Also trying to get my vac to exhaust the sawdust and crap into a bin outside. Anyone have any idea how to do that? :jump:

What Ron means is that you are changing the structural integrity...ie; new framing. Which does require a permit and inspection. I would just go down and get one. It is easy since you aren't changing the footprint. :o

If you see a faded sign by the side of the road that says
15 miles to the... Plug Shack! Plug Shack yeah
I'm headin' down the CAPE COD highway,
lookin' for the Plug getaway
Heading for the Plug getaway, Plug getaway,
I got me a Fish, AND it's as big as a whale
and we're headin' on down
To the Plug Shack
I got me a Chrysler, it seats about 20
So hurry up and bring your TACKLE-box money

The Plug Shack is a little old place
where we can get together
Plug Shack baby, Plug Shack bay-bee.
PLUGS baby, that's where it's at,
OooH PLUGS baby, that's where it's at

Sign says.. WooD... stay away YOU CHUNKIN fools,
'cause Plugs rule at the P_l_u_g Shack!
Well it's set way back in the middle of a field,
Just a funky old shack and I gotta get back

Glitter on the walls
Glitter on the highway
Glitter on the front porch
Glitter on the hallway

The Plug Shack is a little old place
where we can get together
Plug Shack bay-bee! Plug Shack baby!
Plug Shack, that's where it's at!
PLUGin' and a DRINKin', SANDIN' and a TURNIN',
wearin' next to nothing
Cause it's hot as an oven
The whole shack shimmies!
The whole shack shimmies when everybody's
Movin' around and around and around and around!
Everybody's movin', everybody's groovin' baby!
Folks linin' up outside just to get down
Everybody's movin', everybody's groovin' baby
Funky little shack! Funk-y little shack!

Hop in my Chrysler,
it's as big as a whale
and it's about to set sail!
I got me a car, it seats about twenty
So c'mon and bring your TACKLE-box money.

The PLUG Shack is a little old place
where we can get together
PLUG Shack baby! PLUG Shack bay-bee!
(PLUG Shack...PLUG Shack...)
PLUG Shack, that's where it's at!

Bang bang bang on the door baby!
Knock a little louder baby!
Bang bang bang on the door baby!
IF I can't hear you
Bang bang on the door baby
Bang bang on the door
Bang bang on the door baby
Bang bang
You're what?... YOUR TinS ARE ALL rusted!

PLUG Shack, baby PLUG Shack!
PLUG Shack, baby PLUG Shack!
PLUG baby, that's where it's at

Charleston

If you build the doors do yourself a favor and use sheet stock. Texture-111 or similiar. If you use the material that you are using for the siding (Novelty type) the doors will always want to sag.
Get a couple of the rod/turnbuckle kits and have fun building them.

A tip;
When building a door besure that the diagonal runner forming the "Z" frame originates from the top hinge. This will allow this diagonal piece to concentrate the weight of the door right to that hinge.
Vey nice looking garage/carraige house type building. I would give my left nut for a nice building like that!!!

Thanks Sea-5, it took me 5 months to build after i retired workin 12/7 and replaced a 90 year old garage that had a sway back roof you wouldn't believe ready to colapse at any minute. :hihi:
