View Full Version : Keeping fish?
tattoobob 11-04-2005, 06:02 PM Now that we are at the end of the season and the Regulation deal is getting thrown around. How many fish do you keep in a year of fishing
I don't eat fish so I have no need to keep a striper or Blue Fish
unless I catch a trophy I will not be keeping any
striprman 11-04-2005, 06:11 PM I like to eat fish, striped bass are delicious.
I like bluefish too.
So, ya, I keep what I am allowed to keep.
I have kept one 36" striper this year, and two 10 lb. blues.
Everything else has be released to swim another day.
Christian 11-04-2005, 06:40 PM i kept about a 1/2 dozen bass. like all around 36" fish.
kept maybe around a dozen bluefish. 2 trophys, the rest were like 2 pound eaters.
i eat em, and i have some buddies i work with that i basically fed for a couple weeks this summer with bass and bluefish. these dudes go insane over bluefish.
if i have a fish thats legal to keep, and it has a fatal injury, im keeping it, even if its a bloo.
Diggin Jiggin 11-04-2005, 06:57 PM I think I've kept maybe half a dozen fish this year. One was upper twenties but the rest were probably teen sized fish.
I eat the first keeper of the year, and then usually one somewhere in the middle, and one at the end for the freezer. Plus I've kept 2 or 3 fish for friends/family.
I used to feel really guilty about keeping a fish, but reading&hearing about what the commercial take is & bykill from the trawlers and all the other crap that's going on, I'm not so worried about the effect of the few that I take anymore.
seabass 11-04-2005, 07:11 PM just ate a bowl of striper chowda, I only keep what my family will eat.
TheRattBoy 11-04-2005, 07:19 PM I brought home two stripers and two blues so far this year , all others set free...
BigFish 11-04-2005, 07:34 PM In a typical season maybe 2 or 3.....only kept 2 so far this year!
afterhours 11-04-2005, 07:42 PM one so far and one more soon.
macojoe 11-04-2005, 07:43 PM I keep maybe 6 Bass they are not my favorite, I love Blues more! But I only like them freash, so only what I can eat in a couple of days.
Now Fluke on the other hand, I keep all I can get (with in the law) and stock the freezer for the winter months!!
striprman 11-04-2005, 07:58 PM I love striper fishing, but really like going for black sea bass(and 'togs) at Clevelands Ledge and Bird Island when my brother takes his boat out that way. Black sea bass, 'togs and fluke....hmmm I'm hungry now
tynan19 11-04-2005, 08:21 PM I have kept around 6 fish this year mostly because of gut hooks and one that swallowed a 9 inch shad. I have many guys I work with that love fresh fish so they def don't get wasted.
CJ Johnson 11-04-2005, 09:18 PM I usually keep one large fish, which is good for two or three meal fot 3 people.
Everything else get put back to catch again for another day.
Squid kids Dad 11-04-2005, 09:22 PM Just kept one this year...1st keeper of the year at the Race
BigFish 11-04-2005, 09:29 PM Ahhhh....that was a fine day Mike! :D
CANAL RAT 11-04-2005, 09:45 PM i keep fish every once and a while and there usully right at 28in
Squid kids Dad 11-04-2005, 09:50 PM BF...Yes it was..Very memorable....The outermost outhouse.. :D
BigFish 11-04-2005, 09:52 PM :bl:
Surfcastinglife 11-04-2005, 10:08 PM i have a freezer and one of those vacuum sealer dealies, during the summer i keep what the fam can eat, usually a fish a month. i do like bluefish alot the ones in the 2-4 lb range so i start keeping those later in the season and seal them for winter consumption. same with bass. i have 3 in the freezer now. one 40" and two mid thirties. i'd say 75% of what i catch is released. fluke on the other hand.....poor fishies ;P they all get eated :) legal size goes without saying of course but ill say it anyway :D
thefishingfreak 11-04-2005, 10:11 PM i keep every bloofish i can get {within the law} and introduce them to Mr. Chummer :gorez: then i set them free a little bit {in little bitz} at a time...bloos make the best shark chum in the world...
as for bass. if it's gonna die anyway? it's food and gets eaten or handed out.
my freezers's are packed tight for the winter. :hee:
winchmaster 11-04-2005, 11:32 PM God compared to you guys I look like a fish hog. Eight or ten.
fishaholic18 11-04-2005, 11:45 PM I usually only keep the ones that won't swim away healthy.
I kept about 6 this year.
None were wasted. :gu:
Slipknot 11-05-2005, 12:38 AM I had striper for dinner tonight.
I kept 5 this year plus one Milo forgot :), fed lots of friends and family.
Rob Rockcrawler 11-05-2005, 02:15 AM Ive kept 2-3 so far this year. Usually one of the first keepers i get comes home. Striper is not a favorite fish to eat. I usually just make stripers cakes, thats why i have a few pounds in the freezer. I cant seem to kill a bass thats over 36 inches or so unless she got it bad. Over 36 and they get a bit more respect from me for being somewhat smart. Kept a couple blues so far also, 5 pounders. Only take one home a trip cuz its on the grill that night or i wont eat it.
The Dad Fisherman 11-05-2005, 02:33 AM I kept 3 stripers and 1 blue this year....everything else swam away
basswipe 11-05-2005, 06:18 AM I was good for 3 bass and about half dozen blues.
No fluke this year.Last year I caught a bunch of fluke using a yellow/white bomber while plugging for bass.
kippy 11-05-2005, 06:57 AM I kept 4 stripers this year, I like to use them for stripers cakes. Blues.. :yak6:
MoroneSaxatilis 11-05-2005, 08:31 AM I keep one large at the beginning of the season for the grill and the freezer. I have an uncle that I always get one for as well. I have a friend who likes to do bloos in his smoker, so if I get a chopper, it goes to him. Any and all legal sized black sea bass are kept. Everything else gets released, unless it doesn't survive the battle.
Bill L 11-05-2005, 09:48 AM I only kept one
Last night! :tooth:
stripercrazy 11-05-2005, 09:56 AM 3 this year, they taste good to me :ss:
I think i kept 4 tops. my neighbors love bass, so i filet and release to them when they ask me if i could bring one home. One of my neighbors trades me fluke and littlenecks for striper.. cnat beat that :D
I'll take cod, fluke, tog, and especially seabass over striper any day of the week.
Squibby17 11-05-2005, 12:22 PM I have kept three Bass this year. My first Keeper of the season one in July and one a few weeks ago. I would say I release 95% of the fish I catch. I don't keep blues any more.
riverrat2 11-05-2005, 05:13 PM I kept one fish this year about 20lbs. I don't like keeping fish, I can't stand the people who keep fish for the reason of bragging rights and getting there picture on the tackle shop wall. I work at a tackle shop and I see so many fish weighed in that will most likely not be eaten. It makes me sick and if I had the choice I would not have a wall of shame in a tackle shop I think it gives people more of a reason to keep a fish. Sorry bout the rant
Mr. Sandman 11-05-2005, 05:26 PM Maybe 6-8 bass per year
Lots of fluke, seabass scup and tog
None - I put them all back.
fishermanjim 11-06-2005, 08:05 PM two spring bass,,,both with shoulders
capecodder 11-07-2005, 10:24 AM I kept 5 bass this year, all caught in Sept/Oct. Ate some of them and then vacuum sealed the remainder for my once a week striper dinner. Should last me to spring. Kept 3 blues, all badly injured from umbrellas or trebles, for immediate eating, tasty....
Have never vacuumed blues as I heard they do not freeze well. If someone has done so successfully and can give me the secret, I may consider in the future.
All fish I keep are eaten either immediately, given to friends or vacuumed for the freezer.
JFigliuolo 11-07-2005, 10:56 AM I LOVE fresh striper...
grilled, fried, boiled, striper cakes... it's all good.
RIROCKHOUND 11-07-2005, 11:43 AM I'm a gluttonous pig apparantly,
probably 8+ bass thjs year; one more would be nice, eat alot fresh, give alot to friends etc..
I love fresh striper
zimmy 11-07-2005, 12:27 PM I will usually keep one or two in a year, when I get a 28" or so orit is a bad bleeder. None this year as the wife was excpecting and eatin bass is about as good for a fetus as chewin on lead paint chips. One 3 lb blue went in the smoker :humpty:
