View Full Version : What tool did you make the biggest mistake buying???
winchmaster 11-11-2005, 01:43 PM This question came up in my mind when answering the drill press thread. For me it wasn't a costly mistake but one that if I had thought it out better would of definitely taken a bigger step.
IT would be my band saw without a doubt.
I figured wrong, that since I was working with small pieces of wood and making small cuts I would not need nothing more than a hobby band saw. Yes It works but I find myself overwhelming it way too many times. Plus if I had thought about it a full size band saw could of been used to mill rough stock. Instead I waste way too much material using the table saw's fatter blade.
It's also the only tool that "has got a piece of me" because I pushed it too far.
Anyone else wish they had upgraded right away or are thinking about a tool that they think would fill your shops need?
Cranium 11-11-2005, 04:08 PM Winch, I also chose the wrong bandsaw and wish I got something different. Got a model from Sears aka kmart, that they discontinued shortly thereafter. It has a funky size blade which I dont think they make anymore. Plus I have outgrown it and does not cut well. Saving my pennies for something bigger and better.

Labrador1 11-11-2005, 04:16 PM Funny - I have a very large bandsaw and found it a pain sometimes and bought a smaller one. Now I only use my big saw for large (non-plug related) jobs.
Hi Cranium - I will come through with a report - sorry for the delay.
Cranium 11-11-2005, 04:20 PM hey ryan how are ya buddy? no problem you got lots going on.
BigFish 11-11-2005, 04:22 PM Being new on the plug scene (relatively) and needing a bandsaw...I went straight for the gusto and bought a 12 inch Jet! No regrets there for sure! I do not believe in settling for anything less than the best! :kewl:
Bernzy 11-11-2005, 04:25 PM None!!! But I almost bought a scroll saw instead of a band saw. That would have been a mistake.

TheRattBoy 11-11-2005, 05:04 PM Yeah , I bought the scrowl saw...then got a band saw :o :o :usd: johnny
Slipknot 11-11-2005, 05:13 PM band saw for me too. I shouldn't have cheaped out.
Lab1, want to get rid of that large bandsaw ? ;)
ROCFISH 11-11-2005, 05:14 PM Since your on the subject of bandsaws, and I'm thinking of buying one. Maybe someone can recommend the best type and or size. I want to start making darters and also cut better lip slots for my danny's. I've been using a hacksaw and or jigsaw and want something better (as in faster and neater).
ProfessorM 11-11-2005, 05:21 PM Brad point drills I paid 12 bucks a piece for. 10 inches long 1/8 dia.Waste of money.Tried once and never used again. Have way better luck with regular drills. Fortunately I really didn't have to buy much. I got all the best heavy duty band saws, drill presses, Bridgeports, and everything else needed right at work. Only thing that sucks is I got to be at work to use them so I got to plan ahead. Paul
capesams 11-11-2005, 05:38 PM my vote is for a 14" bandsaw...you can tune it,,,,resaw with it...has good roller's..bed.....lot's of different blade's for it....and it'll last. no plastic on this one.....plus if you need to part with it...you have something nice to sell that will for the most part hold it's value.
outnumbered 11-11-2005, 07:49 PM My lathe it has sucked me into this hobby/religion/obsession and it won't let go.

BigFish 11-11-2005, 08:09 PM I highly recommend the JET 12 inch bandsaw.....you will not be disappointed!
