View Full Version : 2nd trip on Vet's Day
Notaro 11-13-2005, 06:40 PM I drove down to RI and arrived at Frances Fleet at 6:30 AM. They charged $60 per person. It used to cost about $55 each person. Anyway, I went on a boat and find it to be packed. As soon we sailed to tog spots. Three Chinese guys whom I met outfished everyone else all day. They exceeded their limit creel by little like more than ten togs. Oh well. I caught a 4 lbs tog just to show my efforts. I am done with it for now.
tattoobob 11-13-2005, 06:44 PM Joey, thats great, the 5 extra bucks was probably due to fuel costs
I noticed that when I went on a charter boat there was a group of
guys out fishing everyone 2 to 1. I then later found out it was WD-40
they were spraying there bait with it. is that cheating? not sure.
JoeyM 11-13-2005, 08:13 PM wd-40?! never heard of that one.
nice fish!
Raider Ronnie 11-13-2005, 08:17 PM I am also wondering,
whats with the wd40?
is it kind of like dogs and antifreeze?
justplugit 11-13-2005, 08:27 PM I know some guys who spray it on their plugs and swear by it. Fish oil base.
Karl F 11-13-2005, 08:35 PM wd 40... know one guy who freezes his eels when the fall runs done, partially thaws them in the microwave as needed come spring/summer, and then sprays wd 40 on them... no lie.
also know another guy like JPI said, sprays all his plugs... catches fish too!
who knows???
libassboy 11-13-2005, 08:37 PM I have met a few guys who use wd-40 over the years. One older guy who swore by it for chunking. Supposed to cover up the human scent, ever smell a bag of storm shads? the reek like wd40. I also met a guy who sprays it on his plugs.
I have never used it so cant say for myself but people who do use it, esp chunkers, would not dream of going without it. One guy that chunks with it nailed his biggest, 53, years ago on a bunker head, with a liberal coating of wd40, he said it was one of the first times he had tried and and has been using it ever since.
Notaro 11-13-2005, 09:46 PM they didnt use any wd40 either. they used a different rig and a different crab, dungeon crab or stone crab.
PI guy 11-14-2005, 07:04 PM Wd 40 is made w/ herring oil. Don't complain about a lack of bait if you use it alot, cause you're supporting those big boats out there taking all the bait. I know a couple guys who won't use it for anything because of that. :conf:
scoobe 11-14-2005, 07:08 PM Last time I read the can it said something like 'petroleum distillates.'
Unless they changed the formula, WD40 is made from the same thing gasoline is, NOT FISH OILS. I don't think all that WD40 in the water can be good for the environment (though I doubt it's used enough to be a problem).

edit: just pulled a quote off their web-site, "...a petroleum-based product like WD-40"
tattoobob 11-14-2005, 07:39 PM I think WD-40 is just oil and Striped Bass love oily fish, It is the basses of the food source/diet
Years back I remember guys spraying the bucktail on Kastmasters with it and swearing by it. (in both salt and freshwater). Only thing I spray with it is my manley's
PI guy 11-15-2005, 05:02 PM Not trying to hijack, just offering some info. Just because it's petroleum based does not mean that it is the only thing in there. :rtfm: The MSDS lists " non hazardous materials" as less than 10 % of the content, I would venture a guess that herring oil would fall into this category. Check this site out and look in the sidebar entitled "scent secrets" they also talk about it.

scoobe 11-15-2005, 09:34 PM Since the formula is a big secret, I guess we will never know for sure.
Rob Rockcrawler 11-16-2005, 11:46 AM Out in michigan a lot of people swear on wd-40 for walleye fishing. It was real popular to spray it on a mister twister while jiggin for walleye, never tried it but saw that it was somewhat effective.
Swimmer 11-16-2005, 12:37 PM
Just what we need is everyone spraying OIL on the bait. Herring something or other in it, or not. Thier has to be other chemicals in the WD 40, other than the herring something or other, that might not mix appropriately with salt water. We'll have a sheen on Buzzards Bay as if another Bouchard barge hit another rock.
