Hers the deal I purchased a new mobo/cpu/ram for my PC

I installed it correctly as I have done many times before.

I go to boot up the system and the power supply won't kick in.
I check the usuall suspects. Power cable to mobo, plugged in the wall, power switch is on everything checks out ok. I am pissed!!!!!! So i throw all my old stuff back in and it works fine so here i am!!!!!!

My power supply is 250 to 300 watts ATX. I am upgrading my system from a 533 celeron to a 1.4 athlon, 256mb 266mhz DDR, with a K7T266 Pro2 made by MIS with the Via K266A chipset.

Please help!

I'm thinking about picking up a new power supply and trying that out.

...but if its a power problem, I would start with the power supply issue.....

.....Is there a compatability problem with it??...is there a list ??...are there certain models that work with some but not others??........DON'T OPEN OR TOY WITH THE POWER SUPPLY!!!...could lead to trouble....try another power supply...does the one you had prior to this one work with the new hardware??....or is it too small?....If its big enough, try using that one....just to see if it works....

There are several possible problems. 1st thing to check, carefully disassemble the motherboard components and lay them all out on a table while FREQUENTLY discharging static on a grounded case oy using a static wrist strap - it is important. Caregully remove the heatsink and then the CPU. THe current heatsink/fan designs are awful n most cases. A LOT of boards are screwed up because people push down too far when installing the heatsink and board gets scraped. If your board is scraped, the CPU won't run and the manufacturer might not replace it. Inspect with a magnifying glass if you have one. Also - NEVER run a current generation CPU without an operating heatsink. I fried a 1.2Ghz in 15 seconds without the heatsink installed... Doesn't take long...

If your board checks out OK, use a box or flat, non-conductive piece of something to place between your motherboard and your case, hook up the pwr/spkr/pwled/reset wires to the proper place on the motherboard (sometimes you'll also need to flip 'em over). Hook up the Main power to the board, put only the AGP card in and with the CPU/Mem/Heatsink installed, see if it will start up. No drives/NIC cards or anything other than CPU/MEM/VIDEO/ should be installed. If it works then, you may have a problem with the way your motherboard is grounding to the case. You'll need shims, those little wafers on the screws, to keep the board from physically touching the case.

Another possible problem is the power supply. AMD is very tough about them and a 250 probably won't work and a 300 with some fluctuation may not work - I run an Enermax 400 powersupply because it's the best out there for relatively short money. The 1.0-1.4 Chips consume a lot of power, the XP and later chips require much less power so the PS is not as much of a factor...

Try all of these things and let me know how it worked (or didn't work)...

I got it to work!! I picked up a new case with a 300 watt power supply my old case contained a 250W so that was the problem. took my about 3 hours just to get back to this site!!! I am viewing it in 16 colors since i haven't installed my video drivers yet..... God now i gotta install all my old software for the next 4 hours :(
Hopefully i don't run into any more problem but with computers you know you will.....

heh funny you should mention that a few years ago when i was a newbie trying to play MR. Fix it I figured I would take apart my power supply and clean it HEH needless to say the power suplly never worked again.... No problem you say? pick up a new one LOl nope the puter was made b compaq "JUNK" so i would have to order it from them for an outrageous price... not only that but everything compaq makes only works with there system mobo, ram, etc..

Thats why I started building my own systems from scratch I save a ton of money and to me I make a good system and save money on software and operating systems.
Also easy to upgrade :)

Good to see it worked. That processor is a hog for power but it's pretty quick....

Uhh, "don't open the power supply" is so you don't die to to severe voltage penatration into the body ;) ...
