View Full Version : Any herring around yet?
JohnR 03-07-2002, 08:49 AM This time last year, the runs in Rhody & Mass were already loading up on herring. Two weeks ago, I checked the Wareham run and it was still empty - anyone seeing anything in the rivers & bays??

flatts1 03-12-2002, 07:18 AM I stopped by the Middleboro herring run yesterday and they are clearly there. It was tough to look through the white water and the glare but I did notice that there were about 3 dozen herring hanging out in a corner left of the first bridge seemingly resting while more of their buddies kept joining them. These fish seemed very healthy and some were real meat dogs too!
Can't wait till 3/27 when the town lets you start taking them.
Uncle Matt 03-12-2002, 10:20 AM John R -
I went to Wareham yesterday and there were at least several dozen large herring in the lower pool by the shack. Nothing in the ladder yet or in the lower river. Bourne had nothing - water level was really low though. Even checked the new river area the Army Corp of Engineers built by Scusset. Nothing but we also were there at low tide. But there were several gulls at the moth of the river by the water line and 5-6 comorants in the water directly out front. ??????
GBOUTDOORS 03-12-2002, 12:01 PM Mattapoisett river! 2:30 Monday.
Plum Island 03-12-2002, 12:08 PM Where can or should I being looking for herring running in my area? Salt Marshes? Side of the river?

Slipknot 03-12-2002, 02:28 PM Plum Island, I am not all that familiar with your area, but just guessing I would say the herring hit the rivers later as you head north. I am sure the herring rum up the Merrimack river though. As far as where the runs are in your area, there may be some info on the web that list the runs in Mass.
Plum Island 03-12-2002, 02:30 PM Thanks :)
TheSpecialist 03-12-2002, 02:36 PM Plumyou probably still have a way to go they have'nt hit the Boston area yet.
