A question for the very informed members of this board. When do you generally start throwing eelskins at the canal? Do you start right away, or generally not until the herring have dried up. Thanks in advance.

I think that when the herring are around and the bass are looking for them , stick to the herring. Lot of people start with eels , rigged eels , eelskins about Memorial Day. However , some people rig the skins short to imitate a herring ( a good skin tied up short will look puffed up like a small baitfish , not an eel) .

Anyway about Memorial Day is when I'd start.

Thanks for the reply. I know that some people start jigging right away, so just wondering about different techniques to avoid the mad herring scramble. I have a few skins from last year so I was just wondering if it was even worth it to try in the spring. The short eelskin sounds like a pretty cool idea. Thanks.

This is my take on this subject. An hour before and after High and Low tides! Eel's any thing!
Later,
