Young Salt 12-04-2005, 09:17 AM are you kidding?
eelman 12-04-2005, 09:20 AM no kidding?
Nope its true, I am taking a ride there in a little while, absolute shocker for me.
Sea Dangles 12-04-2005, 09:22 AM I wonder how many eels perished in the blaze.
Young Salt 12-04-2005, 09:22 AM do they know it was caused it yet?
Clogston29 12-04-2005, 09:24 AM I've always enjoyed stopping there on my way down. Best wishes to the owner, hopefully the insurance will cover everything and they'll be up and running again with minimal losses. Too many shops closing for monetary reasons already, don't need fires and such taking anymore.
basswipe 12-04-2005, 09:25 AM Wow...that truly sucks.
JohnR 12-04-2005, 09:41 AM That does suck, hope nobody was hurt and that they rebuild. But it is just a store, it's the people that work there that make the store great and that will make it great again.
mikecc 12-04-2005, 09:44 AM That sucks.I hope nobody got hurt.
tattoobob 12-04-2005, 09:48 AM That is to bad, It was a nice easy place to get to right off the main road
at least it didn't happen in the middle of the season and they didn't lose business.
eelman 12-04-2005, 09:52 AM well, I dont think they will be open next year.....I am taking a ride now to check it out for myself..
shadow 12-04-2005, 10:00 AM I'am sorry to hear this,at least it happened at a time when no one was there.Hopfully there well be a new building soon.
JohnR 12-04-2005, 10:25 AM I seem to recall they refilled propane tanks there too - right next to the building - that couldn't be good....
MotoXcowboy 12-04-2005, 10:34 AM I wonder how many eels perished in the blaze.
last time I was there they were all done selling eels for the season. So no serpents were lost in the blaze. But alotta of nice plugs...were turned into kindling : (
This sucks. Quaker Lane was the best local (for me) B&T. Good people there, I hope they rebuild..
JHABS 12-04-2005, 10:52 AM Sorry to here this , A R.I. land mark gone..............I'm sure Mike will rebuild fast, He's the biggest in R.I.................
cheferson 12-04-2005, 10:52 AM Holy shiznit! That sucks!
eelman 12-04-2005, 10:57 AM Just got back from taking a peak. The building is standing, I guess the cinder block constrution prevented it from falling down, I expected to see only the chiminey standing so I was surprised, but a peak inside and its gutted, according to the owner , a 100% loss . The windows are all boarded up and there is a big sticker on the front sayin uninhabitable! I would imagine that building will have to come down and be rebuilt. It must have been like an oven in there with all that plastic! Anyway they will be back !
SolOmoN 12-04-2005, 11:04 AM That blows. .... .... ..... dogs
sol...
piemma 12-04-2005, 11:40 AM Mike B has had a bad year personally and now with the business going up in flames. My thought and prayers are with him.
I have been going to Quaker lane for 30 years and it has always been a B&T where you got the straight scoop and an honest deal on anything you needed.
I drove by at 1:30AM and saw it. I have never seen more firetrucks and cops in my life. SO FREAKIN SAD. I live a mile or so from there and it was my go to place for everything. I hope they rebuild bigger and better.
:( :( :(
i cant believe this. :(
my thoughts and prayers will go out to all the quakerlane staff. :(
You guys are right, Quaker lane was a RI fishing landmark.
There were some beautiful classic surf plugs hanging on that wall :crying:
What a shame.
Duke41 12-04-2005, 12:40 PM talk about spot burning:laugha:
fish4striper 12-04-2005, 01:43 PM damn.... that blows....
nice guys there...always helpful....prayers for them
hope they come back
eelman 12-04-2005, 01:58 PM damn.... that blows....
nice guys there...always helpful....prayers for them
hope they come back
They will DEFINATLY come back, its worse for the few guys who were emplyed there full time thru the winter and chrismas is coming! Bad timing. I am sure that they are well insured,The funny part is the total loss and the building still up? I guess those cinder block walls act as an oven, there was some nice stuff in there for sure.
When Steve Called me this morning from what he said, I was expecting to see nothing left standing when I went by because of the total loss comment, but I guess its a shell inside. At anyrate they will rebuild and be back soon. The building may have to come down. Whatever happens they will be back ! My thoughts and prayers to all my friends at Quaker Lane!!
Fish_Eye 12-04-2005, 02:04 PM Sad situation, but Mike plans on rebuilding quickly. No loss of life...the shinners made it through the blaze...hard to believe.
Fortunately his office was not attached to the building so his records and administrative files are all ok.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
JohnR 12-04-2005, 03:47 PM Just got this off an e-mail list:
snake slinger 12-04-2005, 04:48 PM man that sucks QL is my favorite shop steve always treated me great hope they get back on there feet.
BigFish 12-04-2005, 05:05 PM Never been there but what a shame! Best of luck to the owner and those who worked there! Any idea what caused the blaze???
Rock Hopper 12-04-2005, 06:26 PM It's a sad situation and one I wish Mike well with. Knowing him to a degree, I know Mike will re-build his shop and bring it back to the glory that is was before the fire.
If anyone from the shop reads this, please let me know if there is anything I can do to help or PM me Mike's contact numbers so that I can call him since the numbers for the store only have a busy tone at the moment.
Best of luck!
Kadir
Don M 12-04-2005, 10:01 PM Sincerely hope Mike rebuilds great place and staff, with a wonderful diversity of goods for sportsmen. Our thoughts and prayers for everyone affiliated with Quaker Lane.
Good like and God Bless Mike.
Mad Poet 12-05-2005, 04:08 AM Holy hannah... just stopped by there for the first time last Wednesday! Lots of interesting stuff, and the salesguy didn't hassle me for spending all kinds of time window-shopping. (I'm a newbie, so I don't know what to buy, but I want to know what it looks like when I do. :p )
Some top-notch stuff there... Van Stahl reels and suchlike, and an antique wooden fishing pole. A real shame. Sorry this had to be my first post...

kippy 12-05-2005, 08:54 AM That's awful, I went there for the first time this year, great selection and knowledgable staff. I hope they will be back for next year.
tynan19 12-05-2005, 10:00 AM That is a shame and I hope they get back on their feet soon.
Saltheart 12-05-2005, 10:20 AM What a Shame!! I hope the insurance covers everything. Lots of times they don't. I hope the people who work there can collect while its rebuilt? Too bad for everyone involved.
Springtides 12-05-2005, 02:50 PM Driving back from Prov to SoCo Saturday night I saw it from Rt 4. Mike, his boys and his staff are good folks. If anybody will make a comeback, they will.
ThrowingTimber 12-05-2005, 03:09 PM Best wishes go out to the guys there Steve and Dave have always been extremely helpful.
Mr. Sandman 12-05-2005, 04:11 PM That is really too bad. That use to be my local shop. One hopes they build it back up bigger and better. I wonder how it happend? Glad no one was injured.
Pt.JudeJoe 12-05-2005, 06:57 PM I was over there today and talked to Mike. He is doing ok and is planning to be ready for the spring. Not sure about the building yet , but he is thinking positive , and as Martha says "that's a good thing."
mawnstastrypa 12-05-2005, 08:48 PM This is just awful news. Steve is one of the most helpful guys in fishing, hands down. Dave and the kids there are great too. That was my favorite place to go -- not only was the location convenient but they always had what I needed and they were always, always, always willing to help with my random ass, newbie questions. Thanks for everything QLBT! Best of luck to you guys!!!
There will definitely be a spike for John's Tackle's sales down the street, though. Hope he can deal with all my annoying questions...
winchmaster 12-05-2005, 11:02 PM :crying: The smell of burning plugs always brings tears to my eyes.
:crying:
Sorry to hear this and my prayers go out to the people that work there. Good luck
Young Salt 12-06-2005, 06:20 AM Was just about to drop off a couple reels with them....last year they fixed my brokedown baitrunner like it was new.
Too Bad.
dickmont 12-06-2005, 08:14 AM it was a good shop. i esp liked talking with steve who was always willing to share tips, tricks, and advice; and there was another guy there maybe in his late 50's who turned me on to a really great technique for casting my conventionnal that guys use in the distance competitions. got to wish them all well. i hope the rebuilding process is already in the works..
