It took me a 2 weeks to tweak this guy..my typical turnout is usually one plug a week. I usually spend a little time each day after work on them. (great stress reliever) I do all mine by hand, with a hand drill, sometimes a belt sander, and finish em off by stealing my girlfriend’s favorite nail polishes. :hihi:
This is a slow sinking squid pencil popper. The body is 6 1/2" long and weighs 50 grams...4 grams shy of 2oz. I tested it out yesterday afternoon and it goes real nice. I plan on making a few more of these (not necessarily all squids) over the winter.
The plug is through-wired with stainless, although the belly hook is screwed in. I did this incase the hook position threw the action off I could move it to see if the action improved. But the placement was perfect and the next one will have a barrel swivel belly hook.
I got the eyes at work and they are epoxied in with the stuff they had here at work to hold stones in the jewelry. It took a weekend to finally harden! Where do you guys get this 5 min epoxy stuff?
Only thing I wish I had done differently is made the bucktail a bit flashier. With some pink flash or feathers, or maybe even a soft pink rubber squid skirt with long tentacles... I still have yet to tie my own fly (don’t have the materials) so it’ll be a while till I graduate to that stage of plug making..
Anyway, what do yall think of me squid? Think it’ll catch large this spring?
