I have a trip planned for next spring. The primary forage at this spot is squid. Darters have been a go to plug the past few trips for the guys I'll be joining. When bass are keyed in on squid, what plugs do you throw?

Darters are an old standby. Last year, off Chatham with plenty of squid nearby, Habs new squid plugs did very well and they cast a mile+

The squidzee casts a mile and will hug the bottom where the bigguns dwell. I heard you like to hug hairy bottoms.

Hab's squid plug? Which one? I've seen his squid pencil popper, squid straight popper, and squid junior swimmer.

T Lap. During our trip last spring the white SS darter , SS needle in amber seemed to be the ticket. Various colors also worked. Long casts were the key to more hits. Squidzees and loaded SS needles will be in my bag this time around!

If they're on top and the squid are on the large side, one of Mac's versions of the Norris Jet Squid could be a good choice. If they're not on top, maybe a Hab's night and gale would do the trick in white or pink?

Toby last spring SS needles and darters in amber or darters in white with a pink stripe did real well out at that place

Can you still find them? I got a couple that are 30 years old and I just can't get myself to use them.

Paul, I must have 20 - 30 of them. I threw them a lot for a while, but have yet to even raise a fish on one. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Tried many different retrieves.

Toby:
Back in the late 80s and early 90s they were the killer lure on the Backside. Don't know why. Like Capesam said. Let it rest and pop a couple of times. Always hit them when they were resting.

CS & Piemma, Thanks! I knew a couple of you guys would have some insight on the plug. That's probably one of the only retrieves I never tried.

I have a home-made cranberry reverse I'll have to dig out this spring..

Toby; had good luck with Howdy's in spring spots when the squid were around... just bump Bernzy's hook up a size or two on the belly... :smash: I learned the hard way.....

The same thing works with regular atom 40's too. Bend the eye up to cause a sudden downward dart when you jerk the line, and let it sit. It is almost like a popper. Use 25 or 30# mono, no leaders if possible. The fish will actually swim around under the thing and inspect it closely, sometimes there are a bunch of them under it.

TLapinski,

Don't limit yourself to squid-like lures...the big push of squid has already happened (if you're going where I think you are). Sure, there are still some around...but other bait-fish have infested those waters as well...

I'm sure you've seen squid in action, just mimic there swim-style like CapeSamz said. Just be careful setting the hook, you don't want to be late or early :D...if the plug gets grabbed while it's in limbo and she feels the trebbles before you set the hook.....:yak: ....she be'll doin like most female basssss, spittin it out. -

...squid are alien-like creatures, I still think they came from outer-space

white and pink pencils, and if you make your own you could make them heavy enough to sink, but will come to the top when you start working them fast.
