wonder if after "the prohibition" I'll get fined for using the rigged eels in my freezer..or is this just a live eel ban:confused:

could you still be fined if your caught with a dead eel (rigged)? I stocked up on those this year just for this reason.

Hi Joe, I bought one of those recently, should they be fished like eels or faster? The dogfish seemed to like them this year off of chatham.

Chef..Not going to happen next season, go read the stuff on the Atlantic marine fisheries site..And even if it does there are plenty of ways to fool a bass. The the europeon eel which is only slightly different works well and those you will always be able to get.....Most shops I know will sell those. They look just like the american eel only the head is a bit larger , they work just good.

ASMFC is still researching the American Eel with an eye toward listing it as "Endangered" or "Threatened". If that happens, they will be illegal to take or posess. But the commission probably will act to list them till late this year at the earliest.

That does not mean that a state could not prohibet their taking. Maybe RI did so.

Your not likely to see many Europeans eels over here. European eel stocks are in worse shape than American eel stocks.

What exactly do permanent markers have to do with fishing and eels and why would a person refer to someone or themselves as one?

I got about 50 rigged eels stashed away in brine, will there be a "grandfather clause" for them? :)

Kip, just fish them like you would a live eel nice and slow. If you want a more excited action reel a little faster. They can also be trolled at slow speed from a boat or kayak with deadly rersults.
It looks like they won't make any drastic changes till the end of next season .Maybe they will not ban eels totally and just make a size limit for the dealers , I don't think a number limit would do much good because people would just stockpile them in tanks at home .

now there will be more pressure on the mackrel and pogies for use as live bait , last year the macks were thin (had to work hard for them), but i saw and caught some pogies for the first time in 10 years

So.....What if you raise your own eels, say, in your own farm pond. Are they then legal? I mean, I own them, there for they are mine. NO???
