View Full Version : 1oz Bucktail jig
Plum Island 03-12-2002, 10:40 AM How would you recommend I set this jig up?
Below is my setup:
20lb big game test > 2oz weight > 12in clear leader.
Happy <><ing everyone.

eelman 03-12-2002, 10:53 AM First I dont understand the 12inch leader? Why so short? Should be at least 30inches.You dont want the weight that close to your jig.
Second You dont want the weight "stationary" When a fish hits that jig, there going to feel that weight and not take.
Use a barrell swivel, in back of the barrell swivel on your main line, use an egg-sinker, it allows the jig and line to move freely and the fish wont feel that additional weight. And use a leader thats at least 30 to 36 inches in length.
Better yet, use a heavier jig to get down to where you want to be, assuming your fishing in deep moving water.

Ok :) I got the black barrel swivels, and some 1oz egg sinkers.
Let me see if I got this all figured out now. Below is how I think it should all be setup:
20lb big game test line > 1oz egg sinker > black swivel > 18in of the 20lb big game test line > 1oz bucktail tig
Is this correct? Or in other words: Will this work? Total weight is 2oz. Once again sorry if I'm being a pain for asking millions of questions here, but newbie's always want information :)
Happy fishing everyone :)

Saltheart 03-12-2002, 01:08 PM Why not just a two OZ jig. Why the egg sinker at all?
I concur. Less is best in general.
With line being thinner than ever # for # why not
tie directly to a heavier jig?
Glen:confused:
Plum Island 03-12-2002, 01:45 PM What about adding two 1oz egg sinkers?
I have a lot of 1oz jigs I want to try out.
This is why I'm heading in this direction.
Or how about adding a normal **( not moving )**
2oz or 3oz weight?
I understand the less, the better....
but I want to try these jigs, so I'm
trying to figure out the best way.
Happy <><ing everyone.

Slipknot 03-12-2002, 02:35 PM Another option, although it could cost you getting even more gear, would be to use a thin braided line instead of mono so it will cut better in the water.
Unless you are fishing from a boat, then a weight ahead of a jig is ok, but use a long enough leader.
Plum Island 03-12-2002, 02:41 PM So your saying this setup is ok:
20lb > 1oz egg sinker > barrel swivel > 30in leader > 1oz jig ?
It's just like I said I have a lot of 1oz jigs I want to try them out.
So I need to figure this all out. Ya know?
PS:
How long does it take for "shorts" to come off my posts??

TheSpecialist 03-12-2002, 02:44 PM I would go with a lighter line say 15lb big game, and just stick with the one once jigs alone. What is you reasoning for adding the weight? Are you not able to cast it far enough? What are thelimitations of you rod? Now is the time to sort that stuff out.
Plum Island 03-12-2002, 02:47 PM Someone on here said it would be a good setup with the egg sinker. If I only use the 1oz jig, and nothing else...I don't think it will cast to far at all. Maybe it's mean....I will try it with just the 1oz jig :)
Rod/reel both are Quatum *( brand new )*
Other then that I don't know much about them.

eelman 03-12-2002, 03:05 PM Thats waht I said at the end of my post salty, I agree, go with a 2 ounce bucktail:smash: :smash: :smash:
bloocrab 03-12-2002, 04:44 PM Plum, your not going to learn all there is to know just by posting questions. You will get some great ideas, which you have already :)...but the only way to really learn is by "practice". Try all of the suggestions you read on here and see which one works best for you.
..I've designed some of my own ideas and practices so that maybe these fellows can use to either modify or describe a little better in detail for you....in order to further assist you.
...#1:....This is the Egg-Sinker set-up, which is used alot in the Canal while drifting chunks of Herring or Pogy...or even Eels. (there are two types of egg-sinkers that I use, rubber core and rubber-less. The rubber core will not slide on your line, as the rubber-less will)...When I use eels, I like to use a swivel to help control the twisting. I sometimes use an egg sinker with a topwater/floating lure to get it down to a different level. I haven't seen much of this...so use your own judgement. It has worked for me. ;)
...#2:...This the way I setup my "Fish-Finder" rig. (only with chunks that will be heaved, not casted)..if I'm casting, I'll use an egg-sinker...or nothing at all....depending on how strong the current is and the depth of the water.
...#3: ..This is a direct tie up...the jigs will vary from many sizes. (3/8 - 5oz.)...Most of the times I will use a swivel, but sometimes I'll variate.
...#4:...This is my typical Bluefishing Setup. YES, I LOVE FISHING FOR BLUES TOO!!!...:D ...whether I use a hook or a lure, I like a leader. I've had times when using squid, that after the first blue grabs hold, the squid will loosen up off the hook and travel up the leader...and the pursuing bluefish will hit the squid again...but this time its off the leader...so keep that in mind. (I've doodled up a quick picture to clue you in on what I'm talking about)
...I hope this helps. Please feel free to make modifications or suggestions, as I'm always willing to try or at least listen to new ideas....
Saltheart 03-12-2002, 04:46 PM Hi #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&. I read your post and yes you say "Better yet.....heavier jig......" I'm just following up by asking why he doesn't go with that idea. I guess the answere is he has lots of 1 oz jigs and nothing else.
My suggestion , fish somewhere else till he gets some heavier jigs! :)
bloocrab 03-12-2002, 05:04 PM ....anyone else out there ever have this experience happen to them??....There was one night I was using leaders up to four feet...until it dawned on me what was actually happening..:smash:
....I thought they were just swallowing it that fast and reaching the mono.... :smash: ....
....after retrieving a missed hit that night, I noticed the squid had moved up past the swivel.....DUH!!!....made all the sense in the world to me...you don't learn stuff like that without actually putting your time in.....;)
Goose 03-12-2002, 08:39 PM here's my 2 pennies.....when using a conventional setup it's a good idea to have a rod and a half length of shock leader ( 10 or 15 pds heavyer then what your spooled up with. This will let you transfer for energy into your cast without loosing your rigs & jigs and when a fish takes you in the rocks he's your chances are better of him not breakin off........The blood knot is excellent for this and very easy to tie.... when I'm throwin lures, eels and jigs I'll have a swivel before flouro c or wire......Mono = Bass.....One menthod I recently picked up last year while fishing the canal is using pyrimid sinker with wire attached. This is a bottom fish finder rig, instead of using bank sinkers try these out. There's 4 wires that stick out of the sides of this pyrimid sinker that help it grab the bottom, the wires then release with little effort. Give'um a try they hold well in curent. Also, a good thing to do to your jig's is this....wrap solder ( used on cooper pipes ) around where the thread holds the bucktail....be sure to put enough so that when the blues are around they don't ruin your jigs, it'll also give you a little added weight.......so many ????'s .......and so little answer's.....teach me please!!
Saltheart 03-13-2002, 08:37 AM I see something similar Bloo. When fishing for stripes , using a mono leader , you sometimes get a bluefish. Then another bluefish tries to steal the lure from the first bluefish's mouth and cuts the line while snapping at the lure. Happens more than you would think..
