I have a lot of 1oz jigs I want to use. That's why I'm running this poll to get your feedback,thoughts on this.

Less complicated is better unless you are trying to keep the bait small and still be able to go deep in current. If it were me ,I'd just use a heavier jig. But I am the type who tosses 3 oz minimum because of where I fish.unless I'm fishing for schoolies early in the year.

Depends on how the current is running. Near slack tide you might find the 1 oz jigs are too heavy. I've been at the ditch where 2oz jigs nab fish for a while but as soon as the current picks up and you stop feeling the bottom you need to move to a larger jig.

If your river is like most inlets you don't want anything extra on your line, it just give the rocks something else to grab.

Ok you have lots of 1 oz jigs so you want to use them.

The answere is go fish somewhere where 1 OZ is enough. Another answere would be to trade some of your 1's for 2 or 3 or 4 OZ jigs.

Adding the extra weights so you can use the 1 oZ jigs you have in a stronger current will mean you will not catch many fish and you'll likely lose your 1 OZ jigs and the extra weights much more quickly.

Sorry buddy but what you are proposing is just a little too far out there to be practical.

Best set up is running line tied directly to a leader then to a jig. A swivel will help you make the connection if you are leary of a direct running line to leader knot.

I've been fishing a long time and have seen people add weights for eels , live herring or bunker , swimming plugs even sometimes but never for a jig.

Again saltheart tells it like it is! Ilike that.Not only is what your proposing to far out there, The questions are getting foolish.

Go fish the canal on a moon tide and use the one ounce jigs! You will do fine.

UmmmmmmBloo, The question was answerd multiple times in multiple ways, Sometimes a brick wall is hard to penetrate.Its redundancy thats foolish. the post came up several different times with the same question. No one uses weight with a jig, the jig is the weight.

I think I understand what you're saying -- "There's no such thing as a stupid question" ... we all started out in this sport with lots of questions. I find myself asking more questions now than ever.

However, I do feel that our friend Plum would benefit immensely by doing a little homework. Arra's new book would be a great place to start. It covers all the tackle, casting, rigs and techniques any newcomer would ever need. If you have a tight budget, visit a library...lots of good stuff...even the oldest of books like, "Salt Water Fishing is Easy" by Jerry Sylvester will give you an idea of rigs that are just as effective today as they were decades ago.

Maybe, Plum was confused by the fact that lots of great anglers DO USE weights with jigs, although most of them are fishing by boat when they do it. We've nailed some big bass on a variety of rips by three-waying jigs and using up to 8 ounces of lead to get the jig/pork trailer into the big fish zone. I don't advocate this in a surf fishing application however.

I didn't want to discourage Plum from asking questions. I don't think #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& wanted that either. I'm sorry if I did sound like I was discouraging questions. I was just trying to steer the guy to a better way of fishing.

I don't think its wrong to finally say ....Sorry but there is no good way to get that 1 OZ jig to be a 3 OZ jig.... Do you do anybody any good to just say , sure , buddy , good idea , go fish your jigs the wrong way forever??? :)

I understood better what his dilemna was when he posted that that's all he has is 1 inch jigs.

3 waying The Humps!! :) Capt Don would always talk about that back when he had his store. That's a totally different technique and has nothing to do with putting egg sinkers on to get a jig down. Sure the extra weight gets the eel or jig down when 3 waying but the real beauty of 3 waying is to control the depth at which the lure or bait is trolled by adjusting the length of the lead going down to your bottom finder sinker. Its not just to get it down.

Anyway , perhaps I should have answered Plum more gently. I guess at that point I was more concerned with helping him fish correctly than being gentle. I should be able to do both. Sorry Plum.

I was beginning to think we had a baited hook being dropped in front of us! But I am still not sure? Let' try this! I do not have the specifics, however, "PLUM" , Contac Fish and game in Westbobo Mass. They could tell where this is taking place!
The State runs a program on the "HOW TOO'S" of basic Fishing.
I would suggest you sign up! You need to know the basics. And you will not learn them here. You need Show and Tell, where you can ask these types of questions. Every area is Different, and will not apply in every area! Also make a list of questions to bring with you, and a space where you can jot down the answers to your questions. Next Some Vocational High Schools Run a Salt Water Fishing class. "SIGN UP"! Finely:
Join a club. This is a repeat reply I read that some one replied to you! "JOIN THE PLUM ISLAND SURFCASTERS" they show videos and this should be of great help. In notes, I Post I read In reguards of wher to look for Fish! I almost replied but didn’t. I do not speak often!
How ever I cannot resist this. I know of "Three Fifty’s that were taken in water so shallow that there Dorsal fin was sticking out of the water! Just some thing else to think about???

Thanks for the reply Plum. Glad to hear you weren't turned off. Best way to learn as Linesides said is to get some hands on from someone who already knows. I believe you can learn a lot by asking questions here . You can also find out who is fishing where or even when and where our 4 gatherings are so you can get together with someone here. Everybody here is willing to help.

A spade is a spade,If you want to turn a 1 ounce jig into a 3 ounce jig, just use a 3 ounce jig!

Fish-eye is getting EXTREMELY technical by adding in that boat fisherman three way jigs, yup they sure do.But it has absoulutly nothing to do with surfcasting, not even remotely so. So while he states that I "am wrong and people do use weight" on jigs.Its apples and oranges.BTW, Three waying eels blows that method away!

I would think one would need a 10 ounce jig to reach the depths combined with the currents, when boat fishing.(in some areas)
