I should have asked this one last week. I just got the airbrush. When I was using rattle cans i was using rustoleum primer as that's also what I was using for paint. Now that I am using the createx water based stuff, is the rustoleum ok and how long do i need to let it dry before painting... I had been letting the primer sit overnight before painting. Should I still do this or is it not necessary ?

next question is about val oil.

I've been sealing in straight val oil, I leave the plugs submerged overnight and hange them to dry and they dry in a couple of days. I'm pretty happy with the results. Recently there were a few posts about thinning val oil with turpentine. Is there a benefit to thinning it, would it penetrate further into the wood ? If there is a benefit to thinning, would it be ok to use the odorless thinner instead of turpentine ?

I think FFreak says to coat the paints asap, I would still sand inbetween primer and paint.

Val oil is so thick it needs to be thinned to penetrate more into the wood. Alot has to do with A. the type of wood B. the grit sandpaper you use to sand the wood . and C. how long you submerge the wood.
I would use either paint thinner or some other kind of thinner, I didn't like the smell of turpitine. I don't know anything about odorless thinner but it sounds enviromentally something or other so I bet it's low V.O.C.

I let soak 24 hrs. submersed.. dry when you can take a piece of 220 sandpaper to it and raise dust ... If your making a totally sealed plug (lefty) you have to let it dry much longer to dry out innards .. before closing all the doors ..

Tagger, why no to odorless mineral spirits? :huh: I just bought some VAL-OIL and odorless MS. I have not mixed them yet and will hold till' I get more advice. Glad I saw this before I did something I would regret.:D

i'm not a chemist.. just told by a smart guy that turpentine is a natural product and mineral spirits is man made and the 2 combine better...
