Mine look more like haywire wraps :wall: :wall: :wall:

But on the up side, my barrel wraps are pretty good. Maybe someday fishingfreak will teach me how to crank off the extra past the barrel.

where would I get it and what is it?

hard to describe what it is, other than a tool. Almost all tackle shops should have them. They come in two sizes, small, which is good for up to about 50 pound wire and large that covers everything else. They come with instructions and it takes about ten minutes to learn how to make perfect haywire twists.

Unfortunately, du-bro discontinued the large size. You can get a medium that will twist up to #13 wire.

thru the eye. round the shank, then back out the other side.
i like this way.. no hook swing,, holds the bait straiter..

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/thefishingfreak/DSC01634.jpg

put the tag end thru the hole,, and the main line thru the slot then turn the casing so it don't slide out.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/thefishingfreak/DSC01636.jpg

give a tight squeeze here..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/thefishingfreak/DSC01638.jpg

spin the hook 1/2 way to start ..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/thefishingfreak/DSC01639.jpg

then spin the tool for the wraps..push tight while you spin slow.
keep everything strait....like all horizontal..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/thefishingfreak/DSC01640.jpg

take the tag end out the hole,, leave the main line in the slot..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/thefishingfreak/DSC01641.jpg

now put it in the tool like this..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/thefishingfreak/DSC01642.jpg

turn a few times tight..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/thefishingfreak/DSC01644.jpg

bend tag end up towards main line..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/thefishingfreak/DSC01645.jpg

squeeze nice,, put finger tip right up tight to end of wrap
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/thefishingfreak/DSC01646.jpg

this the important part.
gotta bend the wire back on itself strait..like your trying to fold it in 1/2 perfectly.. think like turning a reel crank in a perfect circle..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/thefishingfreak/DSC01647.jpg

little bit more bend..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/thefishingfreak/DSC01648.jpg

and whammo....
snaps off perfect..
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/thefishingfreak/DSC01649.jpg

tahh dahh..
this is going.. NO-where..

Nice job mike !!!
You definitely don't want to cut the tag end with cutters!!!

For sharking, on the hook end you can cut the wire with cutters, you aren't going to get that close to the shark's jaws anyway, on the swivel end you need to break it, to keep it smooth.

great how to Mike!!! :D

That tool looks great, and I think that I saw what I am doing different. Wire out different sides of the hook eye, mine come out on the same side after the wrap. I'm gonna try it your way next time.

FWIW, I like to just go through the hook eye once, so that the hook rides in a loop. I think it gives the bait more action.
