Is saltwater fly fishing easy then surfcasting?
It's just flies, and surfcasting has weight,bait,swivels,etc...

It seems to me tha fly fishing in saltwater would be easier for someone like me *( A surfcasting newbie )* to figure out.


Let me know your thoughts....

PS:
I would be fishing the river off Plum Island for stripers, and blues.

If you are a newbie to surf casting stick with it, it is buy far much easier then Fly Rodding. With surf equipment you can always use weight and muscle to get your offering where it needs to be.

Fly casting takes much more technique and practice rather than muscle. Even with years of practice and experience even the best casters will have considerable trouble casting into a chop with the wind blowing any more than a few knots.

I have often heard it said, "All things lead to fly fishing." Now, I don't know how true that is, but I can say that the long wand is a lot of fun and if you tye your own flies it's even more fun.

You are headed in the right directions for now. Stick with the tackle you have invested in for now and get a little guidance from the folks here at S-B.com, and maybe even a mentor will take you under his/her wing and show you the ropes at the seashore.

The most important thing is to have fun. The second most important thing is to catch fish. I'm sure you'll get to do both.

Fly fishing has some great advantages over traditional casting under some situations. Fishing shallow creeks for example you can usually do better with the long rod than with a spin rod and a plug.

IMO it's a matter of the right tool for the right situation. If you don't fly fish you're cutting out a large opportunity.

Do not attempt to fly fish with a 1oz jig!!!!;)

I am one of the fly rodders with the Plum Island Surfcasters. I tie my own flies and fish both the ocean front and the river. Spin casting is the way to go if you are new to surfcasting, but if you want to try something new fly fishing is fun. You don't have to cast all that far to catch a fish. Look at all the guys in the boats casting in to the shore to catch a fish. The kick is catching a striper or blue on a fly that you tied. I practice catch and release, so I am in it for the companionship and the fun. I have fun fishing with the guys and watching the sun rise and set. Have fun with fly fishing if you like, come to a Plum Island Surfcaster meeting and get a mentor to fish with. See you at the meetings. ;)
