I use a 1$ store plastic version of the first one with amazingly good results. I have several, metal, dial, and plastic and find that the plastic will work to get measurements to "dupe" what I am trying to make on the lathe. If of course you need precise measurments then the ones you pictured will be necessary.

Neither :whackin: :rotf2:

I use a pair of digital calipers. Similar to the top ones you posted. Also have a set like the bottom ones, but don't use them as much. Probably depends more on how you will use them. I mostly use them to determine the thick of the piece I am turning or to check a plug that comes off the duplicator. In that case, I have the diameters at various locations written down and its an easy check with the digitals.

I use my dial calipers all the time. I always used them at work and can't seem to used to using the others.

Thanks for all you input, I ordered one of each. I am getting close to turning my first one. I just wanted to have what I need in place first. I should have my shop set up by Sun.
