i believe it. ive seen it happen to freshwater fish.

I've caught freshwater bass that were smaller than my plug before. I wouldn't doubt it.

Absolutely. Many times I have taken 20 bass on live herring or big plugs. Back a ways we used to throw Gibbs 5-1/8 oz. Pencil poppers in the canal. Outfitted with three 4/0 trebles and about 15 inches long. We regurlarly caught 5 pound bass on them.

Of course this happens plenty in Nature-- although the biggest fish you'd think too smart to eat prey "too" big, esp. like this...

More importantly: unless this is fake or somebody's mount, that's a truly amazing Cow! (Would love to know where approx. on the East Coast she washed up?) Looks to my eyes (usually as accurate as a scale) like a 68 lb. fish, give or take a couple. Looks like a Weakfish (Squet to you NE'ers) around 10- 12 lbs. in it's mouth to me too?

Even if a faked pic, that's quite a days catch for somebody! :drool: Think I last saw her on the (then-) Great Backside in Sept. of '98, rolling on & missing my also very large Metal- lip at dawn, looking me in the eye from 15 yards away, & then waving that same broom-tail goodbye! :lossinit:

this is a good question, but it kind of leads to the question does bigger bait mean bigger fish?

I've always viewed a striper as a big trout or largemouth bass. These fish all like to be effiecient. Eat more, work less. Eating one big bait as opposed to hundreds of small ones just makes sense. Obviously they're opportunistic and a big fish will eat small stuff, but I think given a choice they're very likely to lean towards a larger bait.

Rockport wasnt really a question; bass love big baits, we've all caught 12" schoolies on 7" redfins or dannys, so bass do like big baits..

i do well with bombers when the peanuts are around. not a huge plug but definitely much bigger than a baby pogie...

I can't believe nobody's jumped on this one -- I like big baits and I cannot lie...

Anyhow, if your bait is huge, it will limit your catch by what can be fit in its mouth. The predator will be attracted to whatever prey is tastiest/easier to catch. I don't know how fish do the complex math in their heads, but I think it's something like 2yummy + 3crippled X 5bleeding +2size. I do know that I've caught schoolies on large baits and keepers plus on some little stuff. Until I get inside a fish's mind, I'm going to bring a whole bunch of lures and bait and throw it all until something works.

I have seen a 28 inch bass scaled by a monster bass.My brother had a monster bass at the boat on a 10 lb bluefish he was fighting.
I think in nature when something goes nutty strange things happen.often excitement draws predators that are mostly docile into the fracass. Bass an sharks will swim in the same waters. hook the bass an he becomes shark bait.

BRYAN you mad man, where do you find this stuff?? That pic looks like the world record "French Kiss" LOL of course they love big baits. I've had people tell me they caught large mouth bass on my 10" needle poppers Go figure. I've seen some wild fish.

look at the atom-40 8in long and it has caught cows for 50 or some odd years.keep some small tins in your bag and also some bombers to keep all bases covered

here's my buddies california striper taken on an 8" soft trout, judging by the size of the striper on the east side you could probably throw baits over 12" if you wanted to
