What do you think real or fake?
Either way a cool pic
SWS had a similar pic of a roosterfish that choked and washed up...

View Full Version : Do bass like big baits? RIROCKHOUND 01-19-2006, 09:52 AM What do you think real or fake? Either way a cool pic SWS had a similar pic of a roosterfish that choked and washed up... Christian 01-19-2006, 09:58 AM i believe it. ive seen it happen to freshwater fish. denport 01-19-2006, 10:12 AM That only counts as one fish right?:laugha: I've caught freshwater bass that were smaller than my plug before. I wouldn't doubt it. Flaptail 01-19-2006, 10:52 AM Absolutely. Many times I have taken 20 bass on live herring or big plugs. Back a ways we used to throw Gibbs 5-1/8 oz. Pencil poppers in the canal. Outfitted with three 4/0 trebles and about 15 inches long. We regurlarly caught 5 pound bass on them. LeCounts1099 01-19-2006, 11:58 AM Of course this happens plenty in Nature-- although the biggest fish you'd think too smart to eat prey "too" big, esp. like this... More importantly: unless this is fake or somebody's mount, that's a truly amazing Cow! (Would love to know where approx. on the East Coast she washed up?) Looks to my eyes (usually as accurate as a scale) like a 68 lb. fish, give or take a couple. Looks like a Weakfish (Squet to you NE'ers) around 10- 12 lbs. in it's mouth to me too? Even if a faked pic, that's quite a days catch for somebody! Think I last saw her on the (then-) Great Backside in Sept. of '98, rolling on & missing my also very large Metal- lip at dawn, looking me in the eye from 15 yards away, & then waving that same broom-tail goodbye! :lossinit: Rockport24 01-19-2006, 12:03 PM this is a good question, but it kind of leads to the question does bigger bait mean bigger fish? Pete_G 01-19-2006, 12:27 PM I've always viewed a striper as a big trout or largemouth bass. These fish all like to be effiecient. Eat more, work less. Eating one big bait as opposed to hundreds of small ones just makes sense. Obviously they're opportunistic and a big fish will eat small stuff, but I think given a choice they're very likely to lean towards a larger bait. RIROCKHOUND 01-19-2006, 12:33 PM Rockport wasnt really a question; bass love big baits, we've all caught 12" schoolies on 7" redfins or dannys, so bass do like big baits.. I agree Pete... bassmaster 01-19-2006, 01:04 PM Absolutely. Many times I have taken 20 bass on live herring or big plugs. Back a ways we used to throw Gibbs 5-1/8 oz. Pencil poppers in the canal. NO....they love'um.:bl: Anybody ever live line snappa blues or 1 pounders? Rockport24 01-19-2006, 01:41 PM yeah guessed I missed the point of the post, sorry. do you guys think bass will take big baits over small most of the time? Even when there are peanut bunker everywhere? basswipe 01-19-2006, 04:56 PM That's like asking "Does a crackhead like a big hit?".:rotf2: bart 01-19-2006, 05:29 PM yeah guessed I missed the point of the post, sorry. do you guys think bass will take big baits over small most of the time? Even when there are peanut bunker everywhere? i do well with bombers when the peanuts are around. not a huge plug but definitely much bigger than a baby pogie... Springtides 01-19-2006, 07:08 PM That fish is like me. I never seem to fit in anywhere.:beat: :devil2: Bass Babe 01-19-2006, 08:45 PM I can't believe nobody's jumped on this one -- I like big baits and I cannot lie... Anyhow, if your bait is huge, it will limit your catch by what can be fit in its mouth. The predator will be attracted to whatever prey is tastiest/easier to catch. I don't know how fish do the complex math in their heads, but I think it's something like 2yummy + 3crippled X 5bleeding +2size. I do know that I've caught schoolies on large baits and keepers plus on some little stuff. Until I get inside a fish's mind, I'm going to bring a whole bunch of lures and bait and throw it all until something works. NIB 01-19-2006, 09:24 PM Capesams has a fifty on one sandeel. I have seen a 28 inch bass scaled by a monster bass.My brother had a monster bass at the boat on a 10 lb bluefish he was fighting. I think in nature when something goes nutty strange things happen.often excitement draws predators that are mostly docile into the fracass. Bass an sharks will swim in the same waters. hook the bass an he becomes shark bait. tattoobob 01-19-2006, 09:50 PM Do they like big baits? NO....they love'um.:bl: Anybody ever live line snappa blues or 1 pounders? Yes, and yes they love big baits, fish are lazy and always hungry RI Popper 01-19-2006, 11:02 PM BRYAN you mad man, where do you find this stuff?? CANAL RAT 01-20-2006, 09:30 PM look at the atom-40 8in long and it has caught cows for 50 or some odd years.keep some small tins in your bag and also some bombers to keep all bases covered SocalStriper 01-20-2006, 10:56 PM here's my buddies california striper taken on an 8" soft trout, judging by the size of the striper on the east side you could probably throw baits over 12" if you wanted to vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
