View Full Version : Got hernia?
cheferson 02-03-2006, 02:07 PM WHats the deal with a hernia?? Just found out today i have one where the intestine isnt stuck , but moves back and forth through the tear. How long is the surgery/recovery? Better now then during the season. Can it be put off or does it need to be taken care of right away?
Thanks
BigBo 02-03-2006, 02:14 PM It's an outpatient procedure. Nothing to it. You'll have to take it easy for 3-4 weeks though. Do it now before the start of the season. You won't be swinging any rods while you're recouperating, but you'll be fine in time for the spring run.
Vectorfisher 02-03-2006, 02:26 PM I have been putting mine off for over a year, if I pull a long underground service in I hurt for a few days after, doc said if I double up in pain get to hospital ASAP as I could end up with a C-bag if I waited. I am going to have to find the time to get it done though, maybe next winter
spence 02-03-2006, 02:33 PM Did a double a few years back...sore for a few days but after a few weeks was fine.

I wish i could say i caught enough 30's to cause a hernia, though its Probally from luggin 250lb lexans of food on my shoulder 300 yrds multiple times a day at work .
Raider Ronnie 02-03-2006, 05:05 PM I just went through this past November.
It's day surgery, but in my opinion, they should keep you in the hospital 1 or 2 days!
They put you under for the surgery, so you don't feel a thing!
The 1st few days it was pretty painfull, and I stayed in a recling chair for those 2 days.
They make 3 small cuts and put in a peice of screen mesh that your stomach lining will grow to.
Expect to take it easy for 6 weeks.
Worst thing was finding out that they had put a cathider in (and they removed it before I woke up) and they don't let you leave the hospital till you pee. OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is the cathider always necessary with this procedure? They knock ya out 1st? So i cant work out for 6 weeks? Guess its better then the TC , i thought it may have been.
spence 02-03-2006, 05:48 PM Chef, he's either yanking your chain or didn't have a normal procedure.

Not yanking any chain here.
They told me no food or drink from 12:00 midnight the night before, and I made sure I had nothing fron about 9:00 the night before.
I didn't know they put the cathider in untill it was time to pee, ouch!!!
I yelled at the nurse afterward, she told me they put one in just in case.
TheSpecialist 02-04-2006, 11:43 AM VF you waiting for Dr. Summeroff? Hows the Ot down there?
justplugit 02-04-2006, 01:28 PM Chef, there are several ways they can do it. Spinal, and ya don't feel a thing, iv sedative, out very light and go home that afternoon, or i guess general anesthesia. All depends on the type ya have. Don't put it off, it's really no big deal and your going to feel alot better. If ya have allergies you might wanna do it before spring. You don't wanna be sneezing during recoupe. Don't ask me how i know. :(
cheferson 02-04-2006, 02:47 PM How long was it till you could start working out again and lifting things after the procedure??

no liftying for 6 weeks.
reebok 02-04-2006, 07:56 PM Your #^&#^&#^&#^& and scrotum will be plum purple for a few days. Can you say 'WTF'? I don't know what they do with it, but they must manhandle the sh** out of it.
It hurts like hell for a week although you walk out the same day. You'll get a week's worth of Percocets and you'll use them.
The outpatient guide encouraged having sex right away or even running or riding a bike if you wanted, so to them it's not that bad. But I would not want to have fallen off a bicycle in the 2 weeks following, NFW.
You can put it off. They say if it gets stuck and twisted you'll be an ambulance case, though.
Had one late April and was plugging no problem come June.
You ain't the only one and good luck.

taJon 02-10-2006, 07:49 AM The first day was rough after the surgery. I don't take any pain medicine, but I needed it that day, especially after I sneezed!!!!!
I was back to work in a week, only slightly tender, not sore. You will be amazed at how much your abs actually do. everything is connected you know.
don't sweat it, the procedure is as easy as, well, uh ya.......................
Nothing turned purple for me, just a little bruise by the incision
RLC100 02-12-2006, 08:42 AM If anesthesia can make you nauseas, let them know. They can give you something for it.
I did'nt. Lets just say it sucked trying to hold your stitches from exploding while pukin.:yak5: :yak5:
