View Full Version : mags
Christian 02-04-2006, 05:26 PM can someone help me pick out magnets for magging some reels. i have really no idea what to use or where to get them. ive never even touched a magged reel in my life.
im looking to play with an abu c3 6500,c3 7000,and possibly a jigmaster.
jkswimmer 02-04-2006, 05:42 PM What I did wasglue one3/8 in. magnet in my 6500 and works well with no blocks. There is no adjustment but it helps enough where I do not need the blocks. The 3/8 is the same size and strength as the one in my Penn mag 970. I bought them at Lee Valley tools.

christian, if you do it, use superglue gell and make sure you clean the sideplate really well with isopropal alcohol Start with 2 or 3 1/4x1/10" mags.. you have to put them in opposing polarity order, North, south, north or south, north, south.... then glue 3 washers from lee valley where you want the magnets. Then just stick the magnets to the washers. If you feel there is too much, remove a magnet. if there is too little, add a magnet.
Christian 02-04-2006, 09:03 PM thanks.
Tagger 02-04-2006, 09:15 PM Christain .. you going to plugfest ? talk to Big Dave,, they have a kit for the 6500,,you take out the clicker..the fan.. drill a hole for post ,,drill out end cap for nob ,,put 3 rare earth mags on adjustable plate .. remove all blocks .. Dave did my reel .. 7000 Thumburner hooked me up .. one rare earth mag on home depot parts.
Christian 02-09-2006, 02:42 PM magnets friggen rock.
i got them about 10 mins ago. hot glued a few into my jigmaster, since its the easiest thing to open....its like, AWSOME.
i set them up like you said eben, norht/south/north, i put in 3 1/4" ones, without washers though, im going to grab some on the way back from the field im testing at. from the looks of it, ill probly do better with fewer.
thanks for the help guys.
fcap60 02-09-2006, 04:13 PM I don't want to sound ignorant, although it wouldn't be the first time,, but what are the advantages/disadvantages of a "magged" reel ?
mags help control the spool at insane rpm's. If you have a fast reel with suped up bearings and lite oil, the mags help you from avoiding backlases on casting. Some reels come with stock mags you can adjust like the Abu mag elites, but reels that do not come with mags can be magged with the magnets mentioned above...
Christian 02-09-2006, 06:22 PM casting went well
im going to spool it up with some 25 or 30 mono and i should be able to double my distance. might add another mag, there was a huge difference with them in.
mags, like $2, turning a 50 year old jigmaster into a viable surf fishing machine, Awsome.

Based on your post, would you agree that they are probably not needed on the ABUS 6500s and 7000 w/ level wind and a somewhat educated thumb. I removed 50% of the breaks ( 2 on the 7000 and 1 on the 6500), but may removed them all this year. I don't find the over runs a huge problem, but they do exist.
Would a magged reel cut down a little distance (and let one avoid using the thumb- my favorite part ) ?
frank I cant say for sure. everyone is different. I am about to mag an Avet SX for myself because it is so darn fast. I can control it, but i think the mags will tame it a little. If you hate using your thumb, then maybe you should mag it.

Thanks for the great advice. I have been considering an abu 6500 CS mag elite, but wasn't really sure of the benefits over the other (non-magged) 6500s. I actually do love using my thumb, so I'm not sure if a mag is what I'm looking for.
Thanks again for the helpful feedback and sharing of information.
Frank
Tagger 02-10-2006, 10:53 AM i took all my blocks out on my 6500 c3ct and 7200/level wind.. add good bearings ,ceramic/apec, light oil , now the reel is so fast its unmanageble.. no matter how good your thumb is. Now you need mags to finely tune the speed.. When you get it dialed in you can take your thumb right off the spool ,, no feathering.,, just stop it at the end. All this came from tournament casting,, Thats why I said talk to Big Dave, Christain ... My 7200 is a level wind ,, sounds crazy juicing up a level wind but it cast very well, and the one mag I have in it is a blessing at night .. Although most fishing has gone to spinning tackle and braid/fireline or iron silk ..Not to long ago, most my life I fished conventional because I was casting heavy lines in rocks.. ya can't cast heavy mono with spinning tackle .. Still can't beat this set up there IMHO,, the other stuff is just toys to me ..seeing Big Dave and Stan Kusia cast is one of the most impressive things I ever seen . Stan is so smooth and technical he cast great distances with very little effort.. Big Dave is scary powerful ,, If he breaks off it could easily be fatal if it hits someone.. Thats what it takes to span the canal..
