Do people make their own? Doesn't look too hard, maybe try my own, what do you do?

Pretty easy to make. some leader material, some small egg sinkers and some squids, one hook and you're in business.

We make our own as well. That way we can mix up the shell squid patterns and stingers. Still buy the components from the guys we bought the completed rigs from and we still have them make some up as well. I rig my own spreader bars now too.

jon go to new england industial and marine they got everything to do it yourself.empty bars. squid. crimps,,, all that stuff.there's one in potrsmouth traffic circle.

I'll take that bet and offer a question. What exactly do I need to buy at the supply store? A list with detailed instructions would be nice. I'll prob go tomorrow.

you need a coil of mono 250-400#:huh: up to you, crimps,hand crimper,beads to hold the squid shells on,chafing gear. various colors of squid.hooks 10/0 is ok.
four of five sqiud nose to tail or close. and one about three feet back different color with a sinker inside.hide a beefey snap in the last squid so you can swap out the stingers. stingers are a little bit bigger than the main squid.

thats not set in stone either..

So the 13" squid are the way to go......

What distance inbetween the squids on the daisy chain, 4 - 5"s?
Only weight the stinger or last squid before the stinger? Maybe I should just buy one to see how it goes together, but $72 for one lure, my fiance won't like that :D.

Depends on how fast you want to troll them. The faster you go the more weight in each squid. You can also use some 5 pound test to rig the stinger tot he last squid and when it breaks away fight the fish without the spreader bar.

on the hull truth, the NJ guys are using 9" squids, should I use those or the 13"s? Which do you guys prefer, had the best luck.

if i only had one choice it would be those black bars. if wifey poo gives ya any lip, show her the $160 bars.

Unless you're fishing for giants go with the 8 or 9 inch squids.

Size wise it depends were your fishing.

Don't be afraid to use even bigger squids for SBF's. In our area, Stellwagon, CC Bay from what my freind Skip (who makes many bars) claims... The footballs love the big squids, even bigger than 13, like 15 and 18. South of the cape seems to be a different story, stay with the smaller ones.....

Those ones Freak had on the link are the ticket....., I would not go smaller than 13". And that price is very good. Stay with dark colors.

Tell your fiance' how many squid bars you could have bought instead of that rock on her finger, make sure your about 5 feet from her before you stay it:whackin:

I keep tellin her that it would have been a great down payment on the boat, or a Kia :rotfl: :rotfl:

I will be scaling down my tackle this year. Almost all of the footballls I saw and or caught last season were feeding on small bait. I did not have one hookup on my big bars or chains ( all from Fishermans Outfitters) and only had a couple of fish crash my spread. All of the fish I caught or hooked came on spinning gear and small metals and poppers.
I just went to a great tuna seminar and it seems most are using smaller squids and feathers also.

I'm trying to gear up for some football tuna, I purchased two birds, 3 daisy chains, one with a green machine, one with a 3 small squid and a wieghted green squid, and the third with a 3 medium brown squid and a large wieghted squid popper thingie. I also purchased 2 squid niner rigs. I hope this spread will produce. I'm trying to use my existing striper reel and rod set-ups. I'll keep ya posted in july!!!

I've been rigging my own bars since I was in high school and I think its definately more fun (and way more cost effective) to catch fish on your own bars. That said, those fishermans outfitter bars are probably the most effective and reasonably priced bars out there.
I rerigged 2 bars today since I was snowbound - can't wait til its time to drag em.

taJon, the seminar was in Rowley it was run by some guys from another forum and was excellent. I love my cat and since I am putting on a pair of Suzuki 115 four strokes I am sure I'll like it even better!!
