But I always wondered why a pro player, say hockey, can't place a bet say...on the superbowl...Why not?, that doesn't mean the guy will turn bad and start throwing hockey games etc.

It wasn't the fact that he was betting....it was the fact that Tocchet was running it as a bookie....that's illegal.

Its also illegal to be placing bets with someone who isn't licensed by the State......The government wants their cut you know.

In hockey you may bet "legally" on any other sport as long as its not hockey...Also it seems a major crime family in South Jersey and Philly has been involved...Just the tip of the iceberg...

Sportsflash on EEI says that wiretaps have Gretzky talking on phone about the gambling operation. This was BEFORE the case was announced. Even though the tap doesn't contain evidence that Gretzky did any betting, it shows he clearly lied about not knowing anything about it.
