The Mustad C68S SS tarpon hook as worthy of great consideration for rigging Sluggos.Seems like the best candidate I have experimented with thus far.

JoeP 02-08-2006, 07:58 PM Those are nice. Owner AKI are similar & nice too. Skitterpop 02-09-2006, 05:56 AM Miriabu 230NSR Bait high carbon black Miriabu 1920-S O`Shaughnessy stainless VMC 9729PS southern & tuna stainless Mustad Siwash or Salmon 95160 stainless closed eye Gamakatsu staight eye Octopus 4x (984?) Mike P 02-09-2006, 12:32 PM Don't go with the Mustad stainless Siwash. Too brittle and the eyes break under a little pliers pressure after you bend them shut. At least in sizes 6/0 or smaller Mustad tinned Siwash are still good. It's always been a better hook even if it doesn't last as long before corroding. Still brittle? would be using 7/0 up to 9/0 on some rigs...Thanks. ~~~~~~~~ Or the VMC Salmon siwash? Mike Nebe 02-09-2006, 06:19 PM what do you guys think of the eagle claw "laser" live bait hooks??? I use those and love them. Skitterpop 02-09-2006, 07:50 PM I worried about them but didn`t try any in the last few years. The price is right so if you haven`t had any troubles I`ll try them. Sea Dangles 02-09-2006, 08:27 PM These stainless steel tarpon hooks seem ideal.Closed eye, short shank and x-heavy. Nebe 02-09-2006, 08:32 PM i just looked at that mustad tarpon hook. The only problem I have with it is that they are designed for catch and release and the barb is really tiny. I like a big barb that i can crush down when i am targeting schooies, but on nights when i am hungry for meat, i want something that holds true even if i have to freespool my fish away from rocks and pots.. to each his own i guess. Sea Dangles 02-09-2006, 08:51 PM I am comparing this hook to the Gami live bait and there seems to be no advantage to either hook in barb size.Holding them next to eachother the shank is a little longer on the mustad but the opening on the mustad 5/0 seems identical to the 6/0 gami. One big difference is how sharp that gami comes out of the box and the point is turned in. Nebe 02-09-2006, 08:56 PM interesting. well, compare the barb on the tarpon hook to the barb on the mustad live bait hook that #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& loves so much. Now that's a barb. gamakatsu's live bait hooks are wicked expensive :( Skitterpop 02-09-2006, 09:41 PM Not cheap at $6.75 for 10ct 7/0 but purty Miriabu 230NSR high carbon steel black nickel Bait Nebe 02-10-2006, 07:59 AM sweet hook. I like the hooks that slightly curve upward like that one. I think it keeps you from snagging the bottom at times. Not all the time, but some times. Another thing about hooks and sluggos is that you want the shortest shank possible. if you have a long shank, the sluggo will loose much of its action.. especially if that hook is in the rear of the sluggo. In a pinch last year i used some VMC siwash hooks that i use for my plugs to rig sluggos and the long shanks just killed the action. ALso they are heavy. little weight, short shank, sharp out of the package, a large eye on the end of the hook and a good barb is what i look for in a rigging hook. Joe 02-10-2006, 08:10 AM What's the number and size of that Mustad Eel hook the #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& likes? My distributor does not carry any Mirabu, VMC, Mustad Tarpon, Owner AKI - pretty much everything I want they don't sell. This is a pain-in-the-butt industry, you have to order most everything that is good, direct. Skitterpop 02-10-2006, 08:25 AM I think he said 94150 6/0 used to be called a bait now all around? Maybe Nebe 02-10-2006, 08:27 AM yeah- Mustad-94150 6/0 live bait hook Joe 02-10-2006, 08:28 AM thanks.... Skitterpop 02-10-2006, 08:35 AM Its a bronzed O`Shaugnessy point bent in, ringed, extra short shank not a good longer term hook for rigged items because of rust but then again how much use will you get out of one Slug-Go if you are catching. one place its listed as a school tuna hook in the 4/0 to 9/0 range Skitterpop 02-10-2006, 08:41 AM Its a bronzed O`Shaugnessy point bent in, ringed, extra short shank not a good longer term hook for rigged items because of rust but then again how much use will you get out of one Slug-Go if you are catching. one place its listed as a school tuna hook in the 4/0 to 9/0 range from one place I know 100ct 7/0 $10.95 6/0 $8.85 5/0 $7.30 cheferson 02-10-2006, 08:58 AM yeah- Mustad-94150 6/0 live bait hook  Peter Lajoie 02-10-2006, 05:27 PM IND- I rigged about 20 sluggos with that hook it works fine.
