View Full Version : Where do you get your boat insurance??? C-5 CC 02-13-2006, 04:20 PM I am new to the saltwater boating scene, and am looking for some suggestions as to liability insurance providers. The boat will be moored somewhere in the LI Sound. Thanks Brandon pmueller 02-13-2006, 05:36 PM Usually the cheapest way to insure your recreational boat is to go through the co. that does your homeowners policy. Can't remember if its attached to your homeowners or not. Most independent agents will take care of it. quick decision 02-13-2006, 05:37 PM I had Boat US and dumped them for St. Paul. I think I pay 450 per year. My boat is insured to $32000.00 quick decision 02-13-2006, 05:38 PM There was a reason I didn't use my home owners but I cant think what it was. I will ask the boss tonight. MakoMike 02-13-2006, 05:39 PM Usually the cheapest way to insure your recreational boat is to go through the co. that does your homeowners policy. Not true in my experience, most house insurers don't have a clue as to what boat insurance is all about. Get an agent that specializes in boats. The one I use is the Al Mott agency in Huntington, NY. He's cheaper than Boats U.S. (at least for me). pmueller 02-13-2006, 05:41 PM My feeling is Boat US is very expensive. I guess one of the reasons not to have it on your homeowners is it may jeapordize your policy. St. Pauls had a very competative policy when I ran recreational. missing link 02-13-2006, 06:02 PM I pay around 464.00 a year with boat us, I'm interested a lower premium with total loss coverage ,I also have the towing and trailer coverage through boat us thats 110.00 a season LinkSr. ps: now you got me thinking about it , my mission is to find a less expensive ins. for the boat I don't even pay that much for my homeowners ins. C-5 CC 02-13-2006, 06:06 PM Great info so far. Thanks. Please PM me w/ agent's names and phone #'s Slipknot 02-13-2006, 06:15 PM I pay around 464.00 a year with boat us, I'm interested a lower premium with total loss coverage ,I also have the towing and trailer coverage through boat us thats 110.00 a season LinkSr. ps: now you got me thinking about it , my mission is to find a less expensive ins. for the boat I don't even pay that much for my homeowners ins. Link, try Rogers and Gray. They have an office right in your town. They may be able to save you some cash. pmueller 02-13-2006, 07:27 PM 465.00 is a good price. Van 02-13-2006, 09:07 PM $413 I have prudential, so far no issues. Only had one towing claim a few years ago. MTC 02-14-2006, 06:55 AM I found Boat US 1/2 of what Travelers was... Gotofish 02-14-2006, 08:50 AM I'll second the Rogers and Gray guys..... Mr. Sandman 02-14-2006, 09:05 AM It pays to look around. I agree with MakoMike on this one. Most home insurance co.s do a poor job when it comes to boats. Look for a company that actually does boats. I use an office on the cape, Almeida & Carlson Ins Agency . So far so good and their rates are a few hundred cheaper then Boat US. I have not tried progessive but I think boat us (although I am a member for unlimited towing) is expensive for ins. What you really want to make sure you are covered for is an oil spill and salvage. The cost of these will dwarf what your boat is worth. LT. DAN 2 02-14-2006, 01:28 PM I also have been with Almeida and Carlson as they know the business and are very friendly and efficient. I had one incident and was taken care of with no hassle. I opted for an additional $40 to cover an additional $400.00 in towing to go with their $400 already on the policy ($800 total ). This just about gets we back home from Vineyard Sound/Gay Head. ProfessorM 02-14-2006, 03:38 PM Me three. Almeida and Carlson. C-5 CC 02-14-2006, 06:34 PM I am looking for just laibility. But the mention of oil spill/ salvage coverage is a great point. My homeowners ins co just quoted me $128.00 per year. This is for $500,000 coverage. How does that sound? I will get the specifics and review them before jumping into anything. Thanks for all the great info. pmueller 02-14-2006, 07:37 PM Gee, that sounds good to me. As long as it covers medical claims, electronics on your boat, and the most common damages to your boat. Ask the questions get the answers in writing. If towing is not covered, at that price go to Boat US and get the cheapo membership with towing or sea tow. Make sure you have all the safety devices requried, PFD's, horns (notice more than one), throwable PFD, manual pump, flashlights, radio, gps and epirbs( if you can afford one) . Keep the reciepts and take pictures of the devices installed. You mentioned your mooring the boat and living in Goshen, thats a long way off. Will you be checking your boat frequently?? pmueller 02-14-2006, 07:38 PM What kind of boat is it?? Mr. Sandman 02-14-2006, 07:45 PM I would bet a $128 preimum has a lot of exclusions...look them over good. IMO you really need salvage and oil spill. The laws are very strict in these areas now. The Boat US site had a section on insurance that had some good tips on what to look for sniff around over there. Vectorfisher 02-14-2006, 08:46 PM Whatever you do don't be macho guy when they ask if your boat goes 45 and over, if you answer with a yes I guarantee the premium is higher. C-5 CC 02-14-2006, 09:45 PM My boat is a 1975 Pacemaker 26SF. It's a 350 single inboard, and weighs about 10,000 w/the trailer..... there is no chance it will go even close to 45mph. The guy I bought it from said the top speed might be 22 knots in calm seas....w/ a tail wind...empty gas tanks... and one person aboard! I think it will be a good starter boat. I have 2 GPS units ( a garmin quest and a GPSMAP 60C) and a depthfinder. Boat came w/ a new submersable handheld VHF and another one mounted in the boat. I will do thorough radio ops checks prior to relying on them. C-5 CC 02-14-2006, 09:48 PM Best part is that I only paid $2700 for it!!! And yes, everything works as the seller stated it would. It also came w/ 104 gal of gas in the tanks. C-5 CC 02-14-2006, 09:56 PM Gee, that sounds good to me. I am only looking for laibility, so I don't think the part about electronics and damages to the boat will matter to me. But the medical bills is a good? for me to ask the agent. I can't beleive you even know where Goshen is!!! Most people say, "where??" I tell them that I like it that way. It's about an hour drive south on 8 to get to the Bridgeport area. I am hoping to be mooring somewhere in that general vicinity. I plan on getting down there once every week or two. Good thing is that I have a boat-partner, so he and his family will also be going there too. Hooper 02-15-2006, 06:13 AM I also use Almeda and Calson, the agent's name was Matt something. He did a fine job. Hull coverage and liability to $300K per marina regs. Definitely get a marine insurance policy. God forbid you should need it, I am sure you will be glad you did. beamie 02-15-2006, 09:51 AM Most policies put in with the Homeowners are only Liability. No salvage and spill. I only have my insurance on the HO. I want to get real insurance this winter. The oil spilll salvage these days gets scary with all the envirotypes around. I was thinking of the Almeida and Carson as I have talked with them in the past. outnumbered 02-15-2006, 12:09 PM I use Global Marine Insurance and they beat both Boat US and A & C. http://www.globalmarineinsurance.com/ striperman36 02-15-2006, 12:52 PM Amica, And a umbrella policy for liability gf2020 02-16-2006, 02:44 PM You're in CT, the insurance regulations are different here in MA. I would check with these folks in Essex, CT: http://www.hansongroupinc.com/ I financed my boat through them (the loan was placed with Bank of America), but I ended up getting my insurance through BoatUS. I pay $500 for $28,000 agreed value. missing link 02-16-2006, 04:28 PM i checked out global marine ins they were about the same but had more covarage for boat liability same for spill more for uninsured boater. I will see what my discount this year will be from boat us for no claims the premiums were dollars apart Link Sr:kewl: vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
