View Full Version : Does Anyone Here Agree.......
BigFish 02-16-2006, 11:01 AM with the media that #^&#^&#^&#^& Chaney took too long to report his hunting incident to the media????? If you had shot your hunting partner by mistake or (given the fact we are a fishing site) hooked your buddy by mistake......would you feel compelled to contact the media to announce you had dropped your 175 pound pal by mistake????? What is the media thinking? Other than beating more out of this story than there is!!!
I don't see the big deal....accidents happen to the best of them.....just looking for more controversey......like they need to look for any more???:bl:

Swimmer 02-16-2006, 11:29 AM I think it was up to the local p.d. or landowner to annouce the shooting to the world. In Massachusetts every gunshot that is treated by a hospital/doctor's office has to be reported to the police. That may not be the case in TEXAS. Or the victim and his family. If none of them after due consideration and thought did not want to tell anyone then the white house probably should have let everyone know. The only thing that pisses me off about the whole thing is the news median acting so damn upset because no one told them. They demand to but dont have the right to know. We do maybe but they dont have the right to know a god damn thing. Thats coming from someone who has been at odds with the media. I refuse to call the shooting an accident, because it was not (everything happens for a reason). No law has been violated has it?
striprman 02-16-2006, 11:44 AM I feel bad for both guys, stupid accident. Cheyney and the lawyer that got shot, rich guys hunting...hmm. I still feel bad for both of them (I could say "what idiots") but what happened, speaks for itself.
Skip N 02-16-2006, 11:57 AM This story isn't even about the shooting anymore. Its all about the freakin media and how pissed they are. They act like it was a big cover up and it took weeks for them to find out. It was less than 24 freakin hours you media idiots! They are so making the news it makes me yak. But what do you expect when you have a liberal media who we all know hates Cheny and Bush? Keith Olberman on msnbc is the F'ing worst. All his consiperacy thoeries and picking apart everything, accusing to VP of being drunk. He's a disgrace and an embarasment. So is David Gregory of NBC, he started shouting at the WH press secretary becuase he didnt like the answers he "wanted" to hear. babies they are. If you dont beleive thier is a media bias i dont know what to tell ya! But like i said....the media is just pissed the story got broken by a dinky newspaper in Texas. Fing babies :crying:

I think it was an accident, just an extraordinarily stupid one. Anyone with common sense, with gun experience or not, probably knows better then to shoot parallel to the ground, especially in a field where it's tough to see through the brush.
So far I think other then a few permit issues, no law has been violated.
The only issue with Cheney not reporting the incident immediately is the effect of not reporting it immediately. They are reaping what they sow if you ask me. If you're that high profile in the public's eye it's almost always better to get something like this out in the open sooner rather then later.
capesams 02-16-2006, 12:19 PM booze and gun's don't mix..........even if it was one beer..he should have been grounded..gun case locked up......if it was anyone else, they would have been arrested on the spot and would be awaiting trial right now....I'd also go after the ranch owner too for letting them go out after drinking at lunch....

I agree, the first responsibility is to get medecial attention, then notify the local authorities as required. At that point, in my opinion, the incident is public knowledge. Too bad for the national media if they arn't hanging around some sheriff's office in Texas.
Pete
PS Who taught that guy to shoot, into brush when you can't see clearly?

Actually I don't even know if the brush was at eye level. I would HOPE there was some otherwise shooting a guy seems even more ridiculous.
BigFish 02-16-2006, 12:42 PM The only issue I see is why didn't the ranch owner check their hunting permits to make sure they could hunt game birds???? Seems to me it was their responsibility to oversee the permits of folks they let on their ranch to use firearms!!!:nailem:

Now thats a stretch....Thats like saying if you have a one beer you should be banned from driving your vehicle. Its all turned into a freakin witch hunt to see who can bring down and destroy Cheney the quickest. Its really getting sickening to watch. But thats the media for ya!

Agree. Haven't we all heard, or all used at one time the line: But I only had one beer?
Gimme me a break.......
Then again, Cheney could be telling the truth - he only had one beer. Just not mentioning the few shots of Jack Daniels that went along with the beer......
vineyardblues 02-16-2006, 01:36 PM I hate bashing this guy but it looks like the flood gates are open!
Not sure if it's true but read he has 2 DWI and got tossed from school because of drinking ?

So you can prove he was drunk at the time? And the beer is the reason the accident happend? Nice try....:hs:

MakoMike 02-16-2006, 02:43 PM Press Corps rage over Cheney hunting mishap
was about publics right to know
from them
By Dave Workman
When the White House press corps unloaded on White House spokesman Scott McClellan over the Feb. 11 hunting accident involving Vice President #^&#^&#^&#^& Cheney, they werent really as concerned about the publics right to know as they were about from whom the public knew.
Lets just be clear here, barked NBCs David Gregory. The vice president of the United States accidentally shoots a man, and he feels that its appropriate for a ranch owner who witnessed this to tell the local Corpus Christi newspaper and not the White House press corps at large or notify the public in a national way?
Lets be equally clear. Gregorys nose was out of joint because he and his colleagues didnt get to breathlessly blitz the airwaves with the first report of the shooting. In news parlance, they were scooped by a local reporter who undoubtedly takes home a far smaller paycheck than they do, and they didnt like it.
This isnt about public interest, its about arrogance; the self-delusional belief that because one works the White House beat, they and only they are the fountain from which all public knowledge must flow. Chalk one up for the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and reporter Kathryn Garcia for breaking the story.
When reporters initially ganged up on McClellan, they seemed far less interested in the condition of shooting victim Harry Whittington, or about how Cheney was handling the fact that he had shot his hunting partner, than about not being first to report the incident. They were woefully ignorant about quail hunting and shotguns sadly, too few reporters today understand guns or the people who own them, and seldom bother to try. They smelled blood and wanted their pound of flesh, and it showed.
From asking whether criminal charges might be filed against Cheney to wondering whether he should resign, it was obvious that the press corps does not like Cheney. Less obvious to the public, but certainly clear to any other reporter watching the spectacle was the fact that these people hadnt done their homework.
Within hours after asking the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD), I had a copy of the accident report. It had details about Cheneys gun, the ammunition he used (small No. 7 ½ birdshot, not buckshot as some commentators repeatedly, and erroneously, stated), the hunting conditions and even what the hunters were wearing. It came with an explanation that there is no legal requirement in Texas to report non-fatal hunting mishaps to the TPWD. The Kenedy County Sheriffs Department was investigating the incident.
Much was made about Mr. Whittington being taken to a hospital intensive care unit for treatment of his wounds. From all indications, he was initially kept in the ICU to allow doctors to monitor his wounds for infection. His subsequent mild heart attack compounds matters. Cheney certainly cannot feel good about this. Doctors are monitoring Whittingtons condition and there appears to be no grave danger.
Even more was made about the warning citation issued to Cheney for not having purchased a new upland game bird hunting stamp. Yet, TPWD spokeswoman Lydia Saldana, doing an exemplary job, made it perfectly clear that the stamp has only been required since Sept. 1, and that it has not been uncommon for Texas Game Wardens to encounter hunters in the field who do not have the required stamp.
In these cases, hunters have been given verbal warnings in lieu of fines or other penalties, she explained in a statement. This is a common practice with Texas wardens when a new game law goes into effect. TPWD generally allows a one-year grace period and issues verbal warnings to help educate people about new laws.
Despite the fact that hunting is one of the safest outdoor activities, thanks to hunter education and firearms safety courses, accidents happen, even to experienced hunters like Cheney. He did all the right things, in the proper order: his friends wounds were tended to and Mr. Whittington was taken quickly to a hospital. Local authorities were called, and so was the White House. The delay in telling the press was clumsy but hardly criminal.
This incident is a story, but its not a scandal. Just because some miffed White House reporters want to treat it like one does not make it so.

Saltheart 02-16-2006, 02:48 PM I couldn't care less if he called the press. They are parasites if you ask me.
He was however hunting without the required liscense. If anyone in Texas ever got fined or lost their right to carry for hunting illegally , he should too. He should be treated no worse nor no better than anyone else.
