View Full Version : all nighters, do ya do'um
Goose 02-17-2006, 02:20 PM Fish hard or smart?
I don't do as many as I used to and can't say that when I did I caught more fish but if I'm gonna fish a far away place then chances are its all night. Can you hang all night without steady action? Taking breaks is one thing but snoozing is another. If I have enough water and munchies then I can hang well into the morning...its the ride home that kills me. To me, fishin with a buddie who is into it as much as you are makes all the difference. Lota times its the other way around I have to leave and bass are steady.:splat:
BigFish 02-17-2006, 02:27 PM Yup!:kewl: I try to fish smarter but usually find I am fishing harder! When I drive all the way down the Cape...its usually for all nite!
Christian 02-17-2006, 02:31 PM i did alot this past season. it was my first season ever doing all nighters. and it was pretty awsome. i have no problems fishing alone for 12+ hours. milky ways, beef jerky, and dip kept me going. i quit the dip so thats good. the drive does suck, lare coffee, chugged right before the on ramp, and music blasting windows down was the key to making it home. i like fishing alone, unless its someone whos really into it, like you said. but when you fish alone, you always catch the most fish.
JFigliuolo 02-17-2006, 02:35 PM Some places I fish, there is only enough room for one or two people where you want to be. I've been known to get there 1-2 hours early just to camp out on a spot, so figure a decent walk out, 2 hours plus a full tide cycle and a walk back at sun-up... yup, usually once a week.
Gotta fish all night. Unfortunately I don't get out as much as many nights as I would like to so I stay out as long as I can.
I live on Red Bull. It's nasty but it gets me through. I'd drink Coffee if it didn't give you da sh$ts.
What you said about fishing with someone who enjoys it as much as you is definately true. When I fish with my main partner in crime we rarely talk that much. It's just good to have someone else out there with you.
JFigliuolo 02-17-2006, 02:36 PM If I hit more than one spot an all nighter is guarenteed.
JFigliuolo 02-17-2006, 02:38 PM Fish hard or smart?
Lota times its the other way around I have to leave and bass are steady.:splat:
So your LEAVING bass? :smash:
Squibby17 02-17-2006, 02:38 PM I'm still young so I fish hard especially when I go down to the vineyard twice a year. I have no problem fishing straight through the night but if the action is slow sometimes I take half hour naps up near the dunes or on a rock if thats my only option. I always make sure to start fishing again as the horizon turns pink as many times thats when I get into the fish. I like my new breathable waders as they are way more comfortable to sleep in :)
Last fall I would fish until exhaustion, I basically fished untill I couldn't stand and then crashed woke up a few hours later and did it again. My fishing buddies and I always refer to our regular pepsi's as "full strength pepsi" I also will drink a red bull if need be. This probably isnt the healthiest life style but I pay $ to get to the vineayrd and when I'm there I came to fish not to sleep.
Rockport24 02-17-2006, 02:47 PM never fished all night, but ususally once a week, I'll come home from work, eat dinner with the wife, then sleep from say 8-1am, wake up and hit the striper surf from 2:00am sometimes till 8-9am depending on the action. If it's slow, we leave right after sunrise.
Saltheart 02-17-2006, 02:48 PM Did before ........... Not anymore.
libassboy 02-17-2006, 02:59 PM Redbull is key, I can go indefinately with a good supply. I do find I fish harder when im pulling an allniter, but if i am pulling an all niter there is usally a good reason for it, either im far from home or I know there will be large in the vacinity.
shadow 02-17-2006, 03:18 PM when I lived in CT. I would drive an good hour to fish in R.I. fish all night then drive home, hated the drive home it was dangerious sometimes,so I moved to R.I. now even if I do fish all night which is not always needed once you learn the tides at the spots you like to fish. The drive home is much easier when you live close to where you fish.
The Iceman 6 02-17-2006, 03:19 PM Fish all night, it is the ride home that kills me too. Firm believer in the red bull too. Drive anywhere from 2-3 hours each way just to fish but it's worth it seeing that sunrise on the water.

Krispy 02-17-2006, 03:23 PM allnighters every weekend, mid-week till 2am
Clogston29 02-17-2006, 03:39 PM every time I get a chance. at least once a week to keep me content, more if I can do it around work and the broad.
Pete F. 02-17-2006, 03:39 PM I like to fish all night much better than all day. Besides to fish for stripers I have a min. 3 hr drive and thats all I'm there for. Hopefully this year we won't have so many perfect vacation weekends with little waves, wind and weather. Nothing makes me happier than a good sh***y night...
basically everynight out this year was an all-nighter, in the fall it was almost 2 nights in a row w/out sleep. i'm not driving 2 hrs round trip for a skunking. i drink the big SoBe Adrenaline and also NOS. that %$%$%$%$ is like crack, gets you almost too amped up at times. a 10 minute "doze-#^&#^&#^&#^& goes a long ways too...
this year i'm gonna try to fish smarter. last year i would fish for 16 hrs at a time and completely wear myself out. i feel like i missed out on some good windows of opportunities because i was so exhausted from fishing balls out all the time. sometimes I would start out around 2pm and fish all afternoon and throughout the night, but be too tired to make it to dawn, probably the most productive time during the fall run.
piemma 02-17-2006, 03:45 PM I fish over 100 nights a year. All nighters are silly if you want to:
1) Keep your strength up.
2) Not get burnt out
3) Keep peace at home.
4) I usually fish the smart part of the tides...when the tide is moving so the fish are active. I know there are parts of every tide that will produce fish but there's an old saying "you can't dance with all the girls".
5) I guess that all nighters are OK but they don't work for me. If I can't find fish between Midnight and 3:30 AM they just are not feeding that nights. Besides RIRockhound and I are vampires. We are never caught out in any kind of daylight.
Bronko 02-17-2006, 03:59 PM I try to have a tide stage and a location in mind to avoid all nighters. But I will do them occasionally, especially if the fishing is lights out. I'd say I do a handful during the season. Did a couple this past fall with Keeperreaper if I remember correctly.:boots:
chris L 02-17-2006, 04:12 PM Im not tough enough to fish all nite .
red bull ? why ?
my army training does the trick for me .
scottiehamma 02-17-2006, 04:26 PM you gotta fish the all nighters. even if you learned the hot times at your favorite spots. you never know what's doin out there.
fishin with buddies is good. luds48 is right, you may not talk much but it's good to know they are around.
drink the red bull and eat the snickers. :btu:
striprman 02-17-2006, 04:35 PM I always fish a certain "stage" of the tide. I do this because I learned the fish just aren't where I fish at various tidal stages. I go at night if the tidal stage I like to fish is "right". I go in the day if the tidal stage is right. I like to fish 3-4 tides before I finally pack it in for home. I've caught some nice ones between 11:00 P.M. and 4:00 A. M., I've cought some nice ones at noon, depends on the tide .
The tide brings, and takes the fish.
ThrowingTimber 02-17-2006, 04:36 PM All nighters whenever possible. Almost mandatory on weekends
tattoobob 02-17-2006, 04:41 PM In the fall only, but it all depends where I fish some places I fish from sun down to sun up and others I will fish the tides, it all depends if it's a beach or out flow or if it takes a ferry ride. I guess it's fish smart. I always have my little one burner stove and my cowboy coffee maker with me. plus sandwiches and snacks. In the fall I fish Plum Island, Outer Beaches of the Cape, Block Island, and SoCo RI. In the Spring /Summer I usually fish 4 to 5 hours at a time.
t.orlando 02-17-2006, 04:43 PM Sometimes. Depending on where and who I'm fishing with. Normally in my areas I've figured on a 2-2.5hour window for decent fish.
In The Surf 02-17-2006, 04:44 PM I have done my share and probably will again but on a more limited basis for something like our spring and fall legs or some other fishing occasion. I probably average between 4-6 hours an outing with a few 8's here and there. I find conditions like time of year, tide, wind, current, weather and fish activity to be more of the determining factor of where and for how long.
jim sylvester 02-17-2006, 05:09 PM all nighters can burn you out quickly... pick your tides when the fish are active... Everyone wants the most stamina in the fall, so if you burn youself out by fishing all nighters in the summer months..you could be jepordizing when the Large are moving and hungry..
KEY....... BEING SMART IS BETTER THAN BEING A DIE HARD
Canalman 02-17-2006, 05:20 PM Well, it depends on what you consider an "all-nighter"
Sometimes I do pull a serious all nighter... starting at 9:00pm and ending at 7:00 am, but I hate myself for it everytime, these are few and far between. Very often, I still pull... well... pseudo all-nighters where the tide is right at 12:30 and I'll fish right through until about 4:00 - 4:30... get home for 5:00 ish sleep until 7:00... off to work.... next night go out at 1:00............
But our motto last year was "no all-nighters" and we stayed out for the pseudo all-nighter VERY often... but it paid off.... really well.
As for having a partner that is as into it as you are. That is the great equalizer... without that... I'd be dead or playing golf. :laughs:

that was you
fishaholic18 02-17-2006, 05:44 PM When your partner says "No more all-nighters" he's lying.
Many of my all-nighters were unintentional, time flies when you're having fun.
chris L 02-17-2006, 06:19 PM [QUOTE=fishaholic18]When your partner says "No more all-nighters" he's lying.QUOTE]
personally my partner is a she not a he , she sometimes cant handle it all night either .
not that there is anything wrong with it
nightfighter 02-17-2006, 06:26 PM Yes, when at a destination like say, Cuttyhunk. At home, not so much. I am fortunate to be only a couple minutes from good spots, so can pick tides or my hours to fish. I love the predawn, so that is usually when I choose to go, and then to work. I have often come upon Luds, Clogston, and Scottihamma in the predawn dark, and they have been out all night. That's mostly weekends as they have a drive to that spot! Big five ohh next year, so I needs my beauty rest:laughs:
chris L 02-17-2006, 06:35 PM Big five ohh next year, so I needs my beauty rest:laughs:
your going to need a lot more than you have days left
I can't handle them like I used to be able to do.
But they're highly productive. I like all nighters in June and July because the nights are short. I found when doing all nighters you are better off to come up with a plan beforehand and stick with it rather than improvising as night goes along. The more tired you get the worse your judgement gets and you end up wasting time.
What kind of shape you are in is a big issue with respect to how long you can last. You need to be fairly thin to handle all nighters - or even big trips. I noticed since I became over 40 and overweight I can't do a lot of things like I used to be able to. Skinny bastages like DZ and McKenna - those guys are 50+ and they can run circles around me.
Slingah 02-18-2006, 09:57 AM but when you fish alone, you always catch the most fish.
aint that the truth :hihi:
allniters for me are usually for when there is a drive involved..and time is tight....when i fish close to home it a tide stage thing..then home to bed or off to work....
Rappin Mikey 02-18-2006, 10:02 AM Some weekends the only time I leave the beach is to find cell phone service to tell my wife I'll be a day late to catch up on 2 days of missed sleep.
RIROCKHOUND 02-18-2006, 11:57 AM [ Very often, I still pull... well... pseudo all-nighters where the tide is right at 12:30 and I'll fish right through until about 4:00 - 4:30... get home for 5:00 ish sleep until 7:00... off to work.... next night go out at 1:00............
Yup... this works for me as well.. it all depends.. some times fishing has been at spot X at tide Y, so you follow those conditions for a while until they stop producing, so each night is an hour later than the previous..
working 60-70 hours a week at 2 jobs all season limits me to 2-3hrs a night, 4-7x a week... all nighters are fine if you get to slack off the next day.. If I have meetings or have to drive a boatload of people for 12hrs.. allnighters would be suicide...
Living where I do has a major advantage though; for the tournaments or something I can do dusk-midnight sleep 1-2hrs and then 3-dawn..
that being said I did 1 or 2 all nighters last year, but one was the Spring MS tourney then slept in the car on the way to a wedding in NY and then the second was the fall tourney..
Backbeach Jake 02-18-2006, 12:26 PM I only do 5-6 a season. But those 5-6:smokin: ! The fish til you drop days(Nights) are about done for me.
Young Salt 02-18-2006, 04:13 PM joe walsh for president!!!!!
We get up early and we work all day.
We put our time in 'cause we like to stay up
All night long. All night long.
We keep on grinnin' 'til the weekend comes.
Just a pinch between your cheek and gums.
All night long. All night long.
Start in the morning and get the job done.
Take care of business and we have some fun.
All night long. All night long.
We like a long neck and a good old song.
Turn it up and then we'll sing along. Sing along.
Oh, we're stayin' up all night long.
All night long.
I did a half dozen last year......i'll stay up if the fish give me reason to.
basswipe 02-19-2006, 07:24 AM Not to much anymore. If I do it will usually be a night where I know I won't be working the next day.
I find it easier now to set the alarm and get out if a favorable tide and conditions are late night.
