was just mixing a new batch of oil and was curious--will the use of thinner make a differance in the final result or is turpentine a necessity ?

MAC 02-20-2006, 06:01 PM mineral spirits works fine . The jar just gets gummier than it does with turpentine The Dad Fisherman 02-21-2006, 08:15 AM I have a Dumb Question....Are you supposed to thin Val-oil before using it......I've been using it straight out of the can, as is redneck24 02-21-2006, 09:39 AM I have a Dumb Question....Are you supposed to thin Val-oil before using it......I've been using it straight out of the can, as is i have much better luck thinning it. The Dad Fisherman 02-21-2006, 09:46 AM Is there a ratio for thinning it. I'm liking the stuff because I don't have to wait 2 weeks to prime, 24-48 hours after I dunk'em I can Prime'em. Charleston 02-21-2006, 10:12 AM A 60/40 blend of boilde linseed oil and mineral spirits and you can prime in 48 hrs. I soak the AYC for about a minute. Why is Val oil better? The Dad Fisherman 02-21-2006, 10:20 AM I used to use the Linseed mix but I had to wait at least a week to prime them, sometimes closer to two as it got colder, or the Primer would stay tacky. I tried the Val-oil and I could prime in a day, 2 tops and I haven't had the Primer issue since I switched. gone fishin 02-21-2006, 11:10 AM :rotfl: 50 - 50 mix works well - I used the thinner because I had it and didn't feel like going to the local Homie. Drys quickly and does a good job. Stinks but not a bad as straight turps. will try xylene with the next batch. eastendlu 02-21-2006, 11:10 AM I think the mix is 60/40 val/turp. redneck24 02-21-2006, 11:21 AM linseed sux! it takes 4-5 days before you can prime, and after a little while it starts to bleed through the paint. Young Salt 02-21-2006, 04:55 PM i thought i read here awhile back that val-oil was going off the market......any truth to this  fishaholic18 02-21-2006, 05:00 PM i thought i read here awhile back that val-oil was going off the market......any truth to this  Ask Canalman, I think he knows more about that. MAC 02-21-2006, 05:20 PM Not going off the market but could get harder to get in MA. due to the VOCs. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2025, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
