View Full Version : Cuttyhunk sign up who can still go??
GBOUTDOORS 03-31-2002, 07:22 PM Ok here is the last list of Cuttyhunk bound S-b members I had before I had to shut it off do to the fact that the island would sink if we had any more at one time on the island. The dates are the 15th and the 16th of June. The ferry goes over at 9:00 am and gets to the island at 10:00 or so. Then on Sunday it will leave at 3:00 and get back to N.B. at around 4:00. So I think we should have the derby start at 12:00 noon on Sat. and end at 12:00 noon on Sun. how does that sound to everyone? Please let me know if you can or can not make it as I will need to be sure we get enought food and drinks for all and also get some tents to put up for all that may want to get some sleep Sat. night!

I'll give up my spot. I close on my new house right around that time, so I'm really not sure if I'll be able to pull it off. Thanks you so much for the invite though, and hopefully later in the season we'll be able to hook up. Have a great time guys!

Goose 03-31-2002, 10:10 PM "76 days ta go " Count me in !!!
Rich R 03-31-2002, 10:33 PM I have found that pencil poppers, particularly Cordell ones are a prime lure. Also, last Fall a white 1oz Habs popper was dynamite!
Small and medium Danny's have also been a good plug to have in your bag.
One tip....get your legs in shape!!! Start walking a mile or so a few times a week.
mikecc 04-01-2002, 07:20 AM Jigs,Parachutes,5-1/2"Rebel Wincheter Poper, or any poper that FLOATS, J-Plug & oh ya and EELS.

Used to be that weekend (father's day and US Open) was a golf blow out for me and 19 other nuts I used to run with up at Killington. So now I'm looking forward to a fishing blow out, minus all the killing of brain cells.
I'll be heading down from Marblehead if anyone wants to hook up for a ride. Will be totin' a new Saltheart Allstar that I'm ordering today!
Does anyone know where I can procur a few rigged eels between now and the Cuttyhunk Classic?
nightfighter

Harrible 04-02-2002, 07:02 PM Hi John....
I may want to tag along on this one....pencil me in for a definite maybe!.....
BYW, you cleared with permission, etc. on tent pitching and all that goes with it?
Great to see you at the show. The closest we've been has been a holler from the Canal road to the beach at Pip's.
Harrible
JohnR 04-03-2002, 08:16 AM Harrible, I hate to be the bearer of bad news here when it comes to fishin' that mystical island, we had a signup just beofe Christmas that booked the place up. GB offered us space at his platz on the island to have a S-B trip and we filled it quickly ( :D ). So it would really be up to him if space is available when/if others drop out and can't make it. I know that GB and I don't want to exclude anyone it's just that we (I'm saying "we" - like I have own the house ;) - well, I can dream) have limited space.
There were already some others expressing interest if enough spots from the original list open up (like Swimmer & one other that I can't think of right now). The trip is a little overbooked at the moment but if enough spots open...
We'll see how it goes and GB and I can meet up soon and go over things alittle more (GB - how is next week sometime?)
GBOUTDOORS 04-03-2002, 01:25 PM Some night next week would be fine just let me know so I won't go fishing that night;) Harrible if all goes well this time I would like to do at least one more for those that did not get to go this time.
Bazza 04-03-2002, 09:24 PM If there is still room, I would like to attend.
Bazza:)
Harrible 04-05-2002, 06:40 PM Ok--I understand perfectly how a trip like that could get booked quickly. That's for the consideration and best of luck .....
I have fished those islands many times, albeit from small boats, often casting to the shore instead of from it. You guys should have a ball and some great fishing.
_H
JohnS 04-05-2002, 07:06 PM You guys should have a ball....I know I did last year and look forward to this year! Good luck....and everybody stay away from my favorite rock garden.
JohnS
bloocrab 04-05-2002, 07:29 PM ...GB......I ran into Milo and he asked me to let you know that he's still going.......he's in the process of moving, and his computer is back in the box.....
..he should be back online in a week or two......so count him in
...thanks
Slipknot 04-05-2002, 08:07 PM John S, I hope to be leaving my footprints all over your rock garden. :D hopefully some fish slime as well:laughs:
TheSpecialist 04-05-2002, 09:15 PM Slip don't forget about that secret mark you leave on those rocks. ;)
GBOUTDOORS 04-05-2002, 10:52 PM Thanks for the info Bloo I had not see a post from milo since back in late feb. and was wandering what had happened. So far I have
John R, Bloo, Saltheart, Smokey, Milo, Specialist, Slipknot, Got Stripers, Red Crbbr, Chris l, Goose, Anthonyn, Nightfighter, and Dave S.
Still need to hear from Tattoo? Jhabs? Sandman? Clamdigger? Crafty? Saltydog? BM? Seawolf? quint? Fish Eye?
Also would like to know if anyone has a tent they could bring?
JohnS 04-06-2002, 09:35 AM Leave your Smileys home and don't forget your korkers, and wood is good.
JohnS
bloocrab 04-06-2002, 10:19 AM ...GB, about the tent thing.....;) I'm not too sure about anyone else....but if I'm spending just one night on that island......I "AIN'T" sleeping!!!...:D ..not when theres fish to be caught and a derby to be won!!!..if I happen to get tired, I'll just play dead on the rocks some where....so don't try and give me mouth to mouth if you see me laying down...
...But I am curious about how this is going to be set up...as far as teams, or is it an individual thing or a do whatever you want kinda thing....and how the "food" is going to work out....is it going to be a "bring your own grub" thing...or are we gonna have a little cookout to kick this thing off...and everyone say what they plan on bringing...and ...and ...and...:D..just thought I'd open the door to some ideas. June 15th is gonna seem like two days away before ya know it and we should have all these things discussed beforehand
...I pictured something like a little cookout, and you could always bring your own finger sandwhiches in case you get hungry thru out the night...to give ya some extra needed fuel...:) ...I don't think we should go overboard with stuff though....we're there to fish, not work or give others work....
....I just thought maybe others are thinking about these things but not posting questions yet...I've got no problem either way (cookout vs. BYOF) ~ I just wanted to know, cuz I'd like to help out in any way I can. Opportunities like this don't knock on your door everyday!! ...and I'm a team player, so.... GO-O-O-O - Team!!!
http://striped-bass.com/images/bloo/zbass_jumpin.gif
TheSpecialist 04-06-2002, 10:42 AM I like your thinking Bloo.
GBOUTDOORS 04-06-2002, 12:18 PM Your right Bloo I will be fishing all night but I don't know about every one else and seeing as we have about 20+ that are going if some did want to go back to the house for the night it would be nice to have a place for as many as possible. I will bring my grill and I thought we could kick it off with a cookout from 10:30 to 11:30 on Sat. at the house that would give everyone a half hour to get to the beach by 12:00 for the start.:D Then on Sunday we can all meet back at the house for lunch at say 12:30 or so and have another cook out and for John to give me the prize for the biggest fish;) I will take all the food and goodies over before the 15th that way we will be ready to go on Sat. to fish fish fish.
Goose 04-06-2002, 07:00 PM What about bikes ? Is it easyer to access spots on wheels or is better to hoof it ?....GB I do have a 6 man tent in case the weather gets nasty....you know to keep our gear dry.
I'll give a blue fish mouth to mouth before giving it to a bloocrab;)
GBOUTDOORS 04-07-2002, 06:38 AM Thanks Goose we can take your ten over some day in late May or early June. Could take us a weekend to set it up so maybe we should plan on a Sat. Sun. stay just to figure where to put the ten no fishing ;) That would not be fair. As far as the bike goes I use to ride to the west end with a bike but I have been told that the owners have put up a gate and do not want people riding down the road. Also the roads on the island all go up hill both ways if you know what I mean. We may have to go over another time to check this out also?:) Looks like I may need to make many trips over before June 15th it will be hard work but someone has to do it:p
Ps the only good Bloocrab is one that has been boiled in a pot of water.:laughs:
chris L 04-08-2002, 08:31 AM GB

nightfighter 04-25-2002, 03:37 PM I should put my hand in for a half dozen eels. Only fished with them once, and will be lookin' to the massas for some guidance!
Besides, I'd probably kill them by the time I get down from Marblehead!
How many days left????
Ross
GBOUTDOORS 04-25-2002, 08:30 PM Ok night you got um. Have not done eels myself but will give it a good try this year.
TheSpecialist 04-26-2002, 03:16 PM Don't you guys worry there are some real eel masters here. I learned alot last year from Saltheart, Smokey, Chris L, and John. There are others that have the talent also.

Fish_Eye 04-27-2002, 06:31 AM Now wait just a minute...I wasn't sure if my schedule would allow me to attend...BUT when I saw that Bloo was thinking of bringing octopus stew http://fisheye.striped-bass.com/images/gif/diverunderpus.gif that changes everything http://fisheye.striped-bass.com/images/gif/diversmiley.gif I just might have to show up for some photo opportunities. GBOUTDOORS 05-05-2002, 07:32 PM Hi guys sorry but I was real busy this past week Bloo the stuffies sound great to me but I see that Anthonyn is bringing some so mayby the stew would be good? That way we can get Fish Eye to show;) mar t sorry but do to the number of people that wanted to go I had to limit the number and there are a few that have asked to go if anyone drops out but if enought can't go I will keep you on the list.:( TODAY IS MAY FIFTH and just over a month to go:happy:

JohnR 05-06-2002, 07:21 AM Right you are GB - my favorite Brotha from a different Motha ( OK - that was pretty bad )... Just over one month from now! I remember when this first came up I wondered if it every would arrive :D ...
I think I'll add some of my wife's dishes to the food list (I don't think she'd mind) but she makes a Kick Butt Shepards Pie so I may bring one regular and one Teradactyl, I mean Teriaki :btu:
Plus I'll even cook up some bagels and some fruit ;) ....
Can't wait...
GBOUTDOORS 05-06-2002, 07:19 PM John the Shepards pie sounds great it is one of my favorites but I have never tried the KICK BUTT brand:p I met up with Scotch B tonight in Westport. He picked up my old GPS for his boat and we watched two boats pick up a few keepers on herring in front of the landing. Should have brought the boat:smash: :smash: :smash: Are there any runs that will still have herring in them come June 14th. I would like to take some live over to the island if possable along with the eels???
nor-easter 05-06-2002, 07:36 PM GB Those Herring will not work over there!
We tried for years but it has something to do with the salienity of the water,
the color of the sand,
the lack of a local Herring run to get them thinking Herring,
the depth of the water,
the way the current runs;
all these things are against the Bass liking Herring over there!
Eels don't work very well either but do catch 'a few' fish with eels.
Big "Hunk" Bass like wood, big wood and deer tails, plenty deer tails.
Sometimes Silver lead Kast from shore works
BUT NEVER HERRING....NEVER WORKS......;)
How are you all going over? Private Boats? Airplane? BM Navy?:D
Slipknot 05-06-2002, 07:55 PM "How are you all going over? Private Boats? Airplane? BM Navy?"
I thought you were taking us all over Chet???? ;)
big wood huh? hmmmmm
GBOUTDOORS 05-07-2002, 06:45 AM Chet I will be going over on my boat and I think GS maybe taking his over? But for the most part everyone will be going over on the Cuttyhunk boat on Sat. unless you are offering a ride over for some fellow S-B members:eek: The boat leaves N.B. at 9:00 on Sat. and gets to the Hunk at around 10:00. We will have a cook out at say 11:00 to 12:00 and then let the fishing begin. I will post how to get to the boat soon and were to park. The cost oneway is $12.50 and you get your ticket at the dock just before the boat leaves. I have allready orderd 7dz eels for the weekend and will bring them over with me. Mar T I had already asked my local shop to get the eels for me but thank you very much for the offer to get them for us, maybe next time??:)
Tattoo 05-07-2002, 06:48 AM What were the dates of this adventure again? Sorry but my mind has been in the gutter......
GBOUTDOORS 05-07-2002, 07:05 AM Tattoo its Sat the 15th to Sun the 16th an all night fishing derby remember:smash: :smash: Somewere off the coast of Mass.
JohnR 05-07-2002, 07:45 AM Big wood, huh? I get, well, I'm not going to go there :hs: :hee: :humpty:
"BM Navy" WTH is that? ;)
GB - are you shore fishing or boat fishing while over there? Reason is that I've screwed up my remaining good knee and won't know for a few days if I'm getting scoped or not. I'm still going even if it means I have to dunk a work off a pier - my butt is THERE!
nor-easter 05-07-2002, 11:15 AM BM Navy = Ferry Boat (f***y Boat);) :p :D
Last time I checked there is No Parking Over Night on the City Pier, and no security; which means the Parking Garage on Elm Street which is a fee of $7.00 for 2 days.
John, I can carry a cripple like you on the Nor-Easter. I am trying to find a place to park that would be safe, easy, closeby and low price!
I will be taking passengers out of the "City Public Landing" which is the Pier at the Boat Ramp off East Rodney French Boulevard, just beyond the end of the Hurricane Barrier, near Davy's Locker and Billy Woods Pier. I am trying to get info on parking there.
Will post more later.
GB call me if you like....in the phone book!
GBOUTDOORS 05-07-2002, 11:51 AM John I will be fishing out of the boat and you are welcome to join me if you would like but I feel any fish we get in the boat should not count! Chet I will call you soon.
bebo113 05-07-2002, 12:24 PM HI guy's,
I'm new to the area. what is this cuttyhunk thing all about and where is it?
JohnR 05-07-2002, 02:07 PM GB - sounds good & I agree ;)
bebo - Welcome aboard!
Cuttyhunk is an island between Westport and Martha's Vineyard. Perhaps one of the best Striper Hot Spot's period. It is also one of the most storied for the few that have had the chance to fish it. It is a small Island probably 1/50th the size of MV but just it's just a phenominal array of bassy structure that you'll ever see.
GB had put together a group (which booked very fast) of us over the winter to hit & fish the Island this June...
You're new to the area, where are you now and where are you from? Not in the WPP are you ;p ?
bebo113 05-07-2002, 03:05 PM Hey thanks for the info
I'm from R.I. but i lived in florida for awhile and that's where I started fishing for reds. Now that I'm back up here stripers seem to be the fish to catch. And I'm trying like heck I caught 3 all around 14 lbs. besides the schoolies any ways those were real small.
what's Wpp????????
JohnR 05-07-2002, 03:39 PM Cool...
WPP = Witness Protection Program ;) ...
bebo113 05-07-2002, 04:02 PM I see ,

...hey GB, how ya like the "annual" thing..... EEEEEEEEE....I'm gonna get a beating!!!:smash: :smash:
JohnB 05-07-2002, 05:45 PM Is there still room for another boater ? I would like to run 90 gallons worth of live pogies over there. I am certainly amenable to picking a couple people up on the island to fish with me and the wife. I wouldn't need a place to stay as I could bop over to MV and stay with a friend.

mar t thats if we both can get in you and your me and mine
JohnB 05-07-2002, 07:18 PM I can give ya lift. One problem is that I have a good 3 and a half hr ride to get there from Plymouth. My post was to invite people on the island out fishing on the boat but I have no problem with you just hooking a ride with us. More will make the journey more fun.

JohnR 05-08-2002, 07:48 AM Mar T & JohnB, I'm not the final say on this, GB is, but I am afraid that this trip booked up about 4 days after the invite was made back over the winter time. Just not enough room and we are over booked as it is ... We've had probably a dozen requests for people wanting spots if others drop out.
We do plan to have some get togethers this year... In fact, we have our first shore leg of the annual S-B Tourney in Rhody in June. I just bumped up the other thread and we should get the final plans underway...
JohnB 05-08-2002, 08:34 AM As I mentioned previously, I will be staying in MV. I was just offering to take a couple people off the rock to liveline some pogies from my boat. If there is no room to pick somebody up or if nobody wants to do that type of fishing, it's no big deal. I don't see how we can overcrowd the crew if we are just doing are thing from the boat.

JohnR 05-08-2002, 08:52 AM Where on MV :hihi: ? Another "FAVORITE" spot and certainly a great time to be there.
Sorry, I misread a little. The "Official" plan of the Cuttyhunk Derby is to fish the SW end of the Island from shore with some people getting what little needed sleep at the Hotel d' Greg and some people roughing it in a tent on Island. That portion of the trip, the actual accomidations, is booked up. As far as boat fishing or a possible Bar-B-Q? That's still up in the air - Grilled Pogies, eh?
JohnB - have you fished those waters before?
Thanks,
John
JohnB 05-08-2002, 09:44 AM I have not...that is why I am using the gathering as an excuse of sorts to make my way over there for a day. I would think the place would be as fished out as anyplace could be because of it's reputation. We'll all see for ourselves
JB
JohnR 05-08-2002, 09:57 AM John - I'm no Cuttyhunk expert or even newbie as I've never even fished it but I've talked to some that have boat & shore. My understanding is that from shore, where you can get access things are pretty wide open other than all the rocks. But from boat I guess there are a LOT of boats (and rocks) in there at times. Like Scorton's Ledge crazy but again I haven't seen it yet...
JohnB 05-08-2002, 10:48 AM If it's as bad as a hot fishing day at Scorton Ledge then I may be a no go. I have such a bag o tricks I want to try over there that it might make me overcome my hatred of a fleet.
