Does anyone have information on how to donate fish to a food pantry (contacts, how/when, issues, take entire fish / just filets)?

I practice catch and release, but sometimes a fish cannot be released. I've heard of donating them to a food pantry, but have no good information.

I've tried it a couple of times (once when I ran a United way bluefishing trip at work). You can call the local senior center and get a list of facilities, or the local chamber of commerce, or local churches.

Once we experienced some problems with permits and I think the party boat donated all the fish we left behind to a food shelter.

you just need to call around.

good luck

I practice catch and release - If I have one that cannot be released for any reason, I usually find someone right on the scene that will be beggin for the fish. By the time you get the fish to a pantry or other site it is usually only good for chum! :faga:

have it properly prepared (fillet, steak...) bagged and on ice. They will probably put it in the freezer,or more likely, leave it in the cooler(s) you bring. They dont have ice (for keeping fish fresh) at food pantrys. Come back and get your cooler tomorrow.

note, the pantrys are only open on certain days, at various hours. Give them a call beforehand to check if they will take some of your catch.

you could always donate something other than a few striper or bluefish fillets, at any point in time.

At Amos House in Providence they have "shortfish" for dinner now and then - they come from the DEM.
