The Newport Daily News reported yesterday that the Midway Pier site on Burma Road in Middletown has been listed as the top site for relocating the now defunct Jamestown Bridge Fishing Pier Proposal. DEM has endorsed the site.
The Midway site was listed as #1 of 22 different sites in RI.
What makes this site attractive is it is close to pristine water, has good fishing attributes and, the area has already been endorsed as a recreational fishing site in Aquidneck Island's West Side Plan.
If all goes well this will be where our new state fishing pier is built.
I have fished the area for many years. It offers great fishing. I used to fish the old navy owned wooden pier on the same site (since removed) and took many bass and bluefish from it along with mackeral, flounder, tog, and occasional bonita.

Fishing there brings back some truly great memories of fishing with my dad and mom(before she died).

I truly hope this happens. But this is something that will have to be policed by both the state and our fellow fisherman.I'd hate to see this become one of those places that resembles a landfill more than a fishing pier.

Use some kind of permit system.Say $5 for an annual permit for residents $20 for non and the "garbage crew" would be a non issue.

There's been big talk here in Portsmouth about getting Stone Bridge back into shape and making it a state designated fishing area again.I remember what that used to look like. The piles of garbage, diapers, feces, public urination. The only way to eliminate that is to issue non resident parking stickers for that area of Park Ave. and Stone Bridge and obviously free stickers to people who live there.

There should'nt be a permit system to use the pier, it's a state pier. Kind of like the state fishing pier in Nwpt. They can't keep anyone out but they can prevent you from parking there. Nobody has learned anything. Upping the price of parking permits in Newport still has'nt prevented people from making a mess of the access sites. The people who litter want to fish as much as the law obiding fisherman. I've seen the numbers of people file out of vans that have the sticker and they definitely were'nt locals. I've also seen the car left parked illegally with the woman and the kids waiting for the man to come back. I've fished a spot for a couple of hours and when I come back they're still parked there. Right now Burma Rd offers great access. To me the parking lot they want to put up looks too small. The locals who know this area know what the parking situation already is down there. Let's just hope with the development of the west side that these people developing don't take away the parking where you want to park aspect away from Burma Rd. Keep your eye out on these 55yr and older developments and that O'neill guys developments. Sometimes these people that move to our Island like to change things around.

By the way if you plan on bottom fishing from that pier, beware of all the old gear down there. You're gonna break off alot. The Daily Snooze said that the BlueGold Farm was an oyster farm. Wrong, it was a mussel farm. About 100 yards offshore you'll notice a bunch of floats. That's an oyster farm. Quonset Points grow there. The farm is expanding. The farm encompasses 15 acres. The acreage is'nt expanding just the number of lines supporting the oysters are.

BlueGold Farm and the new proposed pier occupy the same area. Saltwater Farms is the name of the company who runs the oyster farm just north and west of the new pier.

Lack of enforcement should not be a barrier to access or be used as a knee-jerk reaction to prevent the access from moving forward. Instead of having the local cops stake out stop signs to ticket working people, have them get off their a__es and ticket and fine the poachers and litterrs. Put a couple of young cops on foot patrol and start enforcing the laws. The fines for littering are substantial and you don't need to be #^&#^&#^&#^& Tracy to find the offenders.

The pier north of the new proposal is Melville. It is off limits to fishing unless by boat. Things are going to get interesting the next few years on Burma Rd. The O'Neill guy is supposedly putting in a marina with the most slips in New England or is it RI at Weaver Cove north of the boat ramp. He's also got a small marina going in at Kaiser for Carnegie Abbey residents. You know it's funny. The well to do wanted nothing to do with the west side and now they can't get their hands off it. Let's just hope access is'nt squashed in the near furure. Don't get me started on the west side and how rail service is'nt going to extend through this O'Neil guy and his developments north of Green Animals. If that does'nt happen, shame on Portsmouth. This island needs other alternatives other than cars for the tourist to reach Newport.

The dredging for the Carnegie Harbor Village marina was finished 2/21 which was six days overdue. The original completion date was the 15th but the developers were granted a six day extension. They were also caught and fined a paltry $2500 for illegal dumping of dredge in the King's Grant subdivision.

According to project manager Stephen Corridan the marina itself will host 41 slips that can accommodate boats up to 74ft long.Paths are supposed to be provided for public access to the beach as well as a public boat ramp.

Bob Driscoll says its a "win-win" situation for the town.I'm not so sure about that.

Its to bad most Portsmouth residents didn't stand up and take close notice of what was going on under their noses sooner because now its to late. What it comes down to in the end is that a large portion of Portsmouth coastline has been lost to special interests(developers) and the almighty $$$.

With all that being said if anyone believes they'll actually have access to this portion of the shoreline is fooling themselves. All property between Carnegie Abbey and the old Weyerhauser is privately owned and with prospective Harbor Village owners like Madonna our rights will be secondary. The Right of Ways are already there but you haven't been able to park legally anywhere on West Shore Rd. or Willow Lane in years. There is very little to none in the way of parking on Cory's lane now.

I lived on West Shore Rd. for years so I was lucky.I had access by virtue of living there.
