View Full Version : goo goo eyes, how were they used
stripercrazy 03-06-2006, 04:47 AM I know they were trolled with wire at cuttyhunk, is that the way they were build for trolling? I have a couple old ones beaters. I'm just wondering what most people used them for.I've never seen anyone use one. thanks ed.
tlapinski 03-06-2006, 06:44 AM The 6" ones are dynamite in a rip from shore. I still use them regularly. Fish them by sweeping the rod, then reeling back to pick up line, pause, sweep, reel, pause, WHAM!
Flaptail 03-06-2006, 09:32 AM Capt Ron Murphy of Osterville MA, who runs the charter boat "Stray Cat" out of Hyannis was lucky enough to know Capt Sabatowski of the famous "June Bug" on which Carlie Cinto caught hyis 73 pound bass. Capt Murphy was presented with a cache of Capt Sabatowski's plugs when he passed away by his widow.
They are all, except for a Gibbs GTS, Goo-Goo Eye plugs. All had been modified in some way. A number were grooved for an eelskin and most were drilled through and re-wired rather than the screw eyes. The predominant colors are blue and all black. I have never seen an all black Goo Goo other than these. All are the largest size.
Interesting stuff to look at and the re-rigging says it all on how he knew waht worked and why and that he was targeting big fish. All were trolled on wire.
Just thought this would interest you.
t.orlando 03-06-2006, 02:54 PM Used a big one last year at canal for fifteen minutes...............1bass, 1 blue. Gonna try more with it this year
PI guy 03-06-2006, 05:14 PM Spray em w/ white paint and let it get worn away, so the colors show through in spots, this was a simple mod that my neighbor used to do, trolled on wire line deep it earned him quite a few 50#+ fish and a couple 60's back in the hey day.
tlapinski 03-06-2006, 07:10 PM Flap, I've seen a couple all black goo goo's here and there, but not many. I think they were all the 6" size though. Last one I saw I got on eBay as a gift for a friend that collects them.

Sugar pine is the likely candidate.

numbskull 03-07-2006, 09:26 AM Of minor interest, I think the Goo goo eyes was a copy of an earlier Pt Jude swimmer, of nearly identical shape and lip style (the pt jude had a slight cup to the edge of the lip). Maybe someone's got a picture? I saw one on ebay recently.

EricW 03-07-2006, 07:21 PM I have always thought of the large goo goo's as trolling lures. In my opinion and experience, they don't cast great. The bass in my avatar picture is a 54 lb caught on a blue goo goo trolled off nomans land. Attached is a picture of my favorite goo goo's the 4" swimmer. Those are best fished off of a boat or from a pier where you can point your rod tip down and work it back in with steady jerking motions. There were also Goo Goo poppers. One had a nice fat head and made a really nice spray.
Eric
Flaptail 03-07-2006, 07:24 PM Nice collection EricW, thanks for posting the pic, I am drooling!
baldwin 03-07-2006, 08:26 PM They aren't the best casters, but are awful sexy with an eelskin on.
