I found my canal bike and/or restricted access bike for those spots that have parking issues.

I presently have two bikes.
Trek 7500 (new) which is my cruising bike and a
Fuji Grand Tourer , 12 speed (mens excellent condition 20 yrs. old, new tire, brakes, etc).

The Fuji can be used for this purpose but I'm better off to sell it.

So what I need would be a old girls bike, single speed or three speed. I'll be checking out yard sales this spring or follow any of your suggestions.

Yard sale like you said, or check the dump. Lots of people just get rid of old bikes that are fully functional and perfect for a canal bike

I went to the salvation army today in Providence, over priced bikes that are not worth anything. Even the guy working there laughted with disbelieve.

Found a old Columbia 3-speed girls (step thru) bike.
Double baskets in the rear and single in the front.

I need some feedback regarding the PVC rod holders for example,
What length?
Pitch?
Hardware?
Should I notch the PVC for the reel (ex,. spinning) handle to fit snug and place some foam to prevent snap off ?

Wow I was just thinking about this two hours ago. I'm looking for similar info, got the bike and found a local bike shop that can get me the large double rear baskets (paperboy style) and will probably be picking up some pvc tubing and hardware in the next day or so.

I picked up the double baskets (shallow) at Bennys for $15.

Hold off on the PVC and hardware, maybe someone can give some ideas.

18" is fine for the pvc, use hose clamps. Pick up a better kick stand that mounts a little farther back, short money but you will be happy you did. Just make sure you keep a close eye on your stuff when you are fishing. F'n thieves are everywhere, got me last year, still more than pissed off about it too

14-20in should be fine.....important-make sure you put them high enough, so that the rod butt should be about5-6in off ground for turns,bumps,and curbs
Ijust use 2 hose clamps on each, super tight, dont worry about bending the wire on basket
dont need much pitch- just a little for trees(dont forget to look for low branches while riding
notches-dont use them, but won't hurt

Definetly pitch them at an angle or you will hit the trees above. Embarassing to say the least. Also drill out a golf ball and pound it onto kick stand end. That way if won't dig into the soft earth and tip over. I have dumped my lures and rods on the bike path many times as I walked away from the bike. It will help. P.

Amen to that, and thank you rich people. As a kid, my brother Bob and I would hit the Truro dump with a cresent wrench and a couple of screw drivers and ride out with our "new" bikes. I LOVE dump picking. On thieves; my son races track bikes and they are his daily transportation. Track Bike= No brakes, no gears, and no coast; you always have to pedal. His favorite sport is just leaving it and watching some fool hop on. He says that the increasing degrees of "OH S**T! on the theif's face is priceless.

Before you get the pvc measure the but end of your rod. My biggest was slighlty more than 1 1/2 so I had to go with 2 inch pvc. A 10 ft section is like 6 dollars at HD. I put my rods against the pvc to measure how long I wanted them. I also notched my spinning rod tube which helped a lot. 2 pipe clamps on each tube will work fine.
Get the rear wheel kickstand because the others won't cut it. It cost around 15$ but worth it.

I cut my PVC according to the height of the basket. I don't notch the end, as the Canal road doesn't have a lot of bumps. I've never bounced a rod out of the PVC yet. If you're accessing other sites and have to travel bumpy terrain to get there, then notching them is a good idea as well as going with longer lengths of PVC.

Double kick stands do help. I usually lay the bike down anyway after I remove my rods and tackle bag, so I never bothered adding a second stand. If I have two rods, I take both of them with me to the water, as thievery has become a problem. You can also use an old tennis ball to cover the tip of the kick stand. And clunker bikes don't attract bike thieves ;)
