You can also pass it down to the kids in the future. Not like the reels coming out lately

not sure what the price range is on the quantum and okuma but they can't be more than 130. if your looking for something somewhat durable and not too pricey you should put some thought into the shimano spheros. i used the 4000 last year for the spring and just bought the 8000 version for this season. the 4000 held up nicely and was very smooth. internal components are very similar to the penn slammer. easy to maintain. nice reel for $109, i think. braid friendly.

it's no vs but i expect to haul in some cows with it.

I second the Spheros. My 8000 has been to hell and back. It'll be starting its 4th season this year.

The 704 is always a good choice.

I use the Boca 40 and I think it is fine. I might not use it from shore, but on the boat it does everything that I want. The only thing I can say is that the handles can come off if you don't pay attention.

I also have a Boca 40, used it last spring/summer off the kayak and was very happy with it. Handled many "larger than schoolie sized" stripers and Bluefish on it.Very smooth drag performed flawlessly. No problems. Much tougher than my Shimano Stradics. Body held up well to the salt.

Picked up a Cabo PTS60 this year for a "yet to be determined" plug rod. Feels like a winner.More later....

No opinion on the Okumas.

I know the Okuma is a piece of junk, the other one is to small for the surf.

I would look for a 710z or a 704z on ebay.

Ill put in another vote for the speros 8000. Fished it every night for the last two falls. It has been dunked, dropped on rocks, rolled in sand blah blah. After I'm done i give it a quick hose and goes back on the racks. Best reel for the money.
