The students took a row boat from a pier at URI's Narragansett Bay campus early this morning. A security guard heard yelling and screaming from the water about 4 a.m. and called the Coast Guard. Coast Guard spokeswoman Kelly Turner said several boats and a helicopter have been searching for the students since about 5:30. They have found an oar, ball cap and sandal. University spokeswoman Linda Acciardo referred questions to the Coast Guard. spence 03-13-2006, 12:14 PM I'll never forget the search and resuce chopper looking for that family that flipped in Mount Hope Bay a year or so ago. Woke up to full daylight at 1:30am with all the furniture walking across the wood floors. Powerful machine. -spence JohnR 03-13-2006, 12:30 PM There was a CG 40 footer or so working between the URI campus and Dutch and Jamestown this am. Looked like they were watching a couple larger fishing boats (seiners or draggers). Did not see a helo out there on the way in this morning... Hope these kids are found OK... cheferson 03-13-2006, 12:32 PM They found the boat Rockport24 03-13-2006, 12:41 PM I hope these kids are alright, but a row boat at 2:30am in the fog? cheferson 03-13-2006, 12:47 PM How fast does hypothermia kick in when the water is 40? spence 03-13-2006, 12:51 PM You've got a few min to get out, you're not going to stay concious for very long. Nebe 03-13-2006, 06:48 PM I bet they wanted to paddle out to dutch island. thats a popular camping destination. When i was about 8 or 9 i fell off a dock in the middle of winter. it was so cold that the water had a layer of slush. Luckily there was a ladder.. might have died. Little Round 03-13-2006, 06:54 PM Hypothermia kicks in pretty quick. Even when the water is 50+ it I believe between 1-3 hours. I hate to say it but it dosn't look good. I think with the water temp as it is right now it is less than 1 hour. People can get hypothermia in the middle of the summer, just nobody really talks about it. 1dozenraw 03-13-2006, 08:16 PM The news said they had been at a party... not good. Joe 03-13-2006, 09:07 PM There was a big tide push on last night it was almost a full moon - it would have been close to mid-tide when they headed out, so it would have been moving north at a pretty good clip. TimSt 03-13-2006, 09:22 PM The URI bay campus was still closed at 6 p.m. when I went down for the herring meeting. I asked the cop if they were still looking, and he said yes. Most cops were gone by the time the meeting broke at 7. If they hadn't been found by then, I think it would be very, very tough to find 'em in the fog we're having. With the water temps at 40 it's approximately 15 to 30 minutes tops and you're unconscious according to the chart I just looked up. :( It's a reminder for us as to what can happen out there and a tragedy for friends and family of these kids. fishaholic18 03-13-2006, 09:59 PM NARRAGANSETT, R.I. -- The Coast Guard says it will continue searching until Tuesday morning for three University of Rhode Island students who were reported missing while boating on Narragansett Bay. NBC 10's Dylan Dreyer reported that a 13-foot aluminum rowboat was found floating in the West Passage, about 1,200 yards from shore. The Coast Guard said an oar, a ball cap and a sandal also were recovered. The missing students were identified as Daniel Donahue, 20, of Glocester; Geoffrey Wilkes, 18, of Harmony; and Fandia Shloul, 21, of Pawtucket. Donahue and Wilkes are students in the environmental and life sciences program. Shloul is a nursing student. The three set out in a rowboat before dawn Monday. The bay was shrouded in dense fog at the time. A Coast Guard news release said the people might have taken a rowboat from the pier where the University of Rhode Island docks its research vessel Endeavor. Coast Guard Cmdr. Peter Martin said boats would remain on the water overnight to continue the search as long as it is safe. He said fog would prevent searching from aircraft. Other agencies may continue searching beyond Tuesday morning, Martin said. Martin said the water temperature is about 40 degrees, which is a cause for concern. "We have not had any overly cause for optimism at this point," Martin told reporters. "It's very limited survival estimates in that type of water." Martin said he did not know if any of the students had any particular boating expertise. Authorities do not believe the boaters were wearing life jackets. University President Robert Carothers said a security guard at the bay campus heard voices off shore at about 2:30 a.m., but he didn't see anyone because of the fog. About 90 minutes later, the security guard heard what sounded like a moan from the direction of Dutch Island. The security guard called the Coast Guard, which began a search at about 5 a.m. for the three people. Carothers cautioned that it's not certain that whoever was in the boat fell into the water. Searchers also checked Dutch Island by foot and by air for any sign of the boaters. "We're all hoping that whoever is involved in this is on the shore," Carothers said. The students attended a small, off-campus party early Monday morning at Bonnet Shores, a waterfront neighborhood just south of the URI Narragansett Bay Campus, Narragansett Police Chief David Smith said. "Detectives have spoken to people at the house ... We're trying to chase down a bunch of different avenues to where they might be right now," Deputy Chief Joseph Little said Monday morning. Authorities said friends of the missing students discouraged them from launching the boat. Coast Guard boats from Stations Castle Hill and Point Judith and a helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod searched the waters from the West Passage of Narragansett Bay to Wickford. The state Department of Environmental Management, the Narragansett Police Department and a Rhode Island State Police dive team assisted in the search effort. likwid 03-13-2006, 11:58 PM You have 30-60 minutes in 40-50 degree water 15-30 in 30-40 degree water If they'd been drinking, faster than that. Narragansett police are returning to the bay campus Tuesday to resume the search for the three students. Police identified the missing students as Daniel Donahue, 20, of Smithfield, Geoffrey Wilkes, 18, of Glocester, and Fandia Shloul, 21, of Pawtucket. Rescuers searching the bay and a nearby island found a partially submerged aluminum row boat more than 1,000 yards off shore along with an oar, a ball cap and a sandal. Thick fog forced a Coast Guard helicopter to return to base Monday afternoon. Authorities said the chances of survival were diminishing if the students never left the 40-degree water. Coast Guard officials said the search will continue as long as seas are safe. "As you might expect, a lot of the problem is the uncertainty," Narragansett Police Chief David Smith said during a news conference. "We all hold out hope, but not knowing is probably the worst part" for the students' families. The search began before sunrise Monday after a security guard at URI's Narragansett Bay campus heard people talking off shore about 2:30 a.m. but didn't see anyone through the fog, URI President Robert Carothers said. Coast Guard officials said the voices sounded distressed. About 30 minutes later, the guard heard what he thought was a moan from the same area and called the Coast Guard, Carothers said. The search turned up the row boat, said Tom Guthlein, commanding officer of a Coast Guard station in Newport. The boat appeared sea worthy, but the passage is frequently traveled by larger vessels, Guthlein said. Fog reduced visibility early Monday morning to as little as 50 yards. A fishing boat passing through the area in the early morning reported spotting an obstruction in the water, officials said. But the fishermen couldn't positively identify the object in the dark and fog. Authorities didn't believe the boaters were wearing life jackets. "We're all hoping that whoever is involved in this is on the shore," Carothers said. Donahue and Wilkes study environmental life science and Shloul studies nursing, school officials said. The students were attending a small, off-campus party early Monday morning at Bonnet Shores, a waterfront neighborhood just south of the Narragansett Bay campus, Narragansett Police Chief David Smith said. Friends of the missing students discouraged them from launching the boat, authorities said. Smith said the boat did not belong to the students. Fellow URI Students Keep Vigil For Missing Peers The missing students were all native Rhode Islanders just starting spring break. Sam Scibarassi, who owned a pizza shop in which Shloul worked, called her, "a wonderful girl." "She was full of life," he said. Shloul worked in the Narragansett pizza shop a couple of days a week for the past three years. In fact, she was scheduled to work a 5 p.m. to midnight shift on Monday. "A lot of people that work here, you know, have called in, and they can't work," Scibarassi said. "They're a mess. The staff -- we're pretty upset about it." Bobby Sheehan, who was friends with all three missing students, was especially upset. "They were good people," he said. "I hung out with all three of them at least once or twice a week so." Donohue and Wilkes are from Glocester, while Shloul is from Pawtucket. All three disappeared early Monday after getting in a rowboat after a party near the University of Rhode Island's Naragansett Bay campus. Friends gathered at the Bonnet Shores neighborhood where the party was held. Many lined the foggy shoreline with brown paper bags filled with lit candles, hoping for the best. "I'm very hopeful, very hopeful," said one person. "I was there this morning when I heard about it." On Web sites such as MySpace and FaceBook, where the students had Web sties, other friends posted their own messages of hope. "It's tough," said one person. "It's a tough thing for everybody. Hopefully, it will turn the way everybody wants. I'm just keeping hopes up." piemma 03-14-2006, 01:29 PM Just found out that one of the kids is a buddy of mine's son.... JohnR 03-15-2006, 11:03 AM Why did it take so long for the seccurity guard to call the coast guard? Why did it take so long to get a search party out there? After reading the excerpt about that, hindsight I am sure he wish he had but on foggy nights when the bay is realtively calm and a small wind from the SE and the fog it brings, you can sometimes hear noises from clear across the bay. I think it is reasonable that the secuirty guard heard noises like this in the past and not heard anything to cause initial alarm. Now the season is wrong, but even now, some activity happens at night on the bay so hearing voices, while maybe unusual at this time of year would not cause a call to authorities... Since they called off the rescue efforts, I don't think there is much hope as previously mentioned. Prayers and thoughts go out to the families and friends of these kids and I hope they get as much closure as they can. Yes, thoughts and prayers for the missing and their friends and families Skitterpop 03-15-2006, 02:18 PM Godbless them, their families, and friends.
