go ahead and laugh..saw an article in fine woodworking a few year back on how to make a spring pole lathe..They work pissa from what I hear...

A number of years ago Fine Woodworking put out a book called making and Modifying machines that has a couple of lathes in it. Not too hard to build but the cost of the parts would probably be close to a midilathe unless you were a good scrounger.
I built a stroke sander out of it that works well.
