The Weymouth Herring Run Committee will host an annual clean up day Saturday, April 1. Participants will meet at Herring Run Park, corner of Broad and Commercial streets, at 8 a.m., rain, shine or snow. The group will be cleaning up trash, cutting brush and removing debris. Those interested in helping should dress for work. Last year, there were 50 volunteers despite the cold and snow, and a lot of material was removed.
Once again, Dunkin' Donuts will provide refreshments. The herring arrived about the same time as clean up last year, and about 80,000 fish made their way up river to Whitman's Pond thanks to everyone who helped.
Due to the small numbers of returning herring over the last few years, Massachusetts, along with other New England states, have stopped all taking of herring until at least 2009.
For more information, call 781-749-0189 or e-mail gmloring@verizon.net.
The Weymouth run clean up is two weeks from today!!
I will be there will you ???
I think the clean up is important now more then ever.
