Went to have my taxes done last night. Old friend of mine from high school does them. About five years ago he purchased a DD. Where shall remain unsaid. He then bought two more the next year that were failing believe it or not. He nows owns eight. I asked him last night about hiring, firing, employee turnover, and so on, thinking all the time about our brother here who the counter help screwed out of change for the $20.00 dollar bill. I asked him how much it cost to build a stand alone on land you would buy and using a building you would pay to have constructed as opposed to leasing the land and/or the building and /or both. My accountant was very up front. I have always been curious about the cost because I know there is tremendous profit in coffee. Then my accountant asked me how much I thought he lost through employee theft. I threw out $1,000,000.00 for a figure thinking it was way over. Well it was over, but only by $600,000.00. Yes, he and his brother who run and own these 8 DD's lose a minimum of $400,000.00 a year to employee theft. The worse store was on the south shore that he bought, and the theft ring was run by a 16 yr. old who had been working at the store. SO THE EMPLOYEES NOT ONLY PURPOSELY GIVE THE WRONG CHANGE BACK TO US THEY ARE STEALING FROM THE BOSS TOO.

no wonder they charge 2.10 for 30 cents worth of coffee....
"shrinkage" every form of retail's nightmare...
I have been in several DD's and noticed that the LED readout is "off " on the cash register... they punch numbers, and say the amount... drawer open whole time... ...lets see, register off, drawer stays open... not TOO obvious.... I always ask.. "Why isn't the register on?".. man, they get all freakin flustered over a simple question....
never mind a detective... a fifty dollar camera aimed at the register, hooked to a hundred dollar vcr, locked in the office, checked daily.... nah... too easy... got a whole bunch of cameras, and a coupla vcr's, where I work... just nailed a shoplifter real good with it.... ran the tape to the PD, played the tape.. no denying, they even turned direct face to the camera, while doing the deed :D

The daughter of na guy I work with just married into the DD family. Her inlaws own about 20 of them. They are filthy rich from what I hear.

My buddy has been lucky enough to figure out what is going on pretty quickly, but with every new hire comes new problems.
