Just trying to figger out which hook on a pencil popper or a needle catches most fish. In my experience the front hook does most of the catching, and I beleive that to be due to my thinking that bass strike prey head first. On occasion a fish will get the rear hook from a pencil, but that seems to be the case when the fish made a half hearted swipe at the plug. Just trying to get some feedback to settle an arguement. Thanks guys and gals!

It's usually bass on the head, blues on the tail.

I've always found that bass, especially the larger ones, take the front hook, sort of like going for the kill shot. Smaller bass and bluefish seem to hit the plug in a sudden, uncalculated burst which results in a fair number of tail hook ups. That's just my oppinion, I am sure there are others twho will say different.

when I get into fish on needles I will remove the tail hook, as it makes it safer for the fish and myself.

which end is up on a pencil popper while its whippin the water back an forth. One time i snagged a bunker while usin one.i was like sh!T I snagged a bunker.so i figure lets see what happens take the line off the roller an in seconds i got picked up.35 lb bass had the bunker an the 4 oz pencil down its gullet.I think they get a pencil where they can.Thats why when i make my own I'll go 4/0 front an 5/0 back.minimum.Never a siwash. No need for feathers or bucktail.

lets face it... when a big bass hits a plug, she will inhale it, it doesn't matter where the hook is because the plug is in the gullet...

smaller bass/blues...... rear hook

sluggos.. mostly front hook
