Heading for Kauai ( Hawaii ) this weekend with the wife and baby . I'm bring my travel rod ( St. Croix Tide master 3/8-2oz ,12-25 line , 7' 3xpiece ) and Abu 6500c3 and 6500 Big Game ( Black ) . I've got some Cast Masters , Beach master Jr.atom , Popers , Yo-zuri dart/swimmers and gibs pencil popers .

Anybody been over there and could recomend what else I might need / works .
Any help would be great

When I was there in the Navy, a local told me that predatory fish love the Gar looking fish (forget what they are called), so that needle might be a killer. I would think any kind of popper would be killer as well.

If we can avoid the rain we'll have a great time , although my wife gave me the evil eye when I put my fishing rod next to the suit case.

I went to Maui in September, it was my honeymoon, so I didn't get that much fishing in, but I bought a cheapo combo and the guys at the store gave me some poppers (yozuri's), told me some spots, and sent me on my way. Like stripers, the jack and such there are night feeders so you really have to go at night, which I didn't do, so I got skunked, but the needlefish comment is a great one, saw tons of needlefish looking fish when snorkaling, oh, that's the other great thing about Hawaii, you spend your days snorkling, so you can do recon!

I don't know much about Kauai, but almost every local in Maui told me the best fishing in Hawaii is in Kauai, so have a great time!

I've been there 3 times. First, let me say you picked the right Island, Kawaii is beautiful. If you like to Kayak at all, I would suggest you do the Napali coast with a guide, I did it and it was one of the most amazing days I've ever had on the water. If you don't decide to do the kayak, at least get out there in a boat and check it out. As far as fishing goes, I didn't do any from shore but charter is the way to go. Last time I was there, we got into a school of tuna and it got to the point where when the rod went off, I was too tired from the last fish. I went home exhausted b/c I never got a break from the reel. My father who incedently hates fishing, said it was the highlight of his trip. If you need any advise on the island feel free to ask. My family might rent a house over there next year, so I can't wait to get back out there. BTW, it will rain, it does every day but only for about 15-30m and it feels good.

I'm just thinking of other things to do... There is a beach that is right next to Napali, it is almost all locals, you have to drive through dirt roads near sugar cane fields for a while and then you get to one of the most desolate, beautiful beaches I have ever seen (I traveled the world for 2 years and this one still stands out as one of the top beaches I have been to)

i used to live on maui, bring a throw net, bout all ya need.

Didn't fish there but saw plenty while snorkling and surfing. Have you been there before?

Ive nerver been been to Hawaii , very much looking forward to it . I'm hopeing I can take a puddle jumper over to Pearl. definately looks rocky on the south side of the island but I hope that will mean fish.:btu:

I stayed there two years ago. Bring something lighter and lots of small flashy stuff like 1/16 Oz castmasters in both silver and gold. You'll catch plenty of little fish right off the beach in front of the resort. Needle fish, goat fish, snappers, lizard fish, trumpet fish, little trevally. All lots of fun. usually plenty of room to fish in front of the resort if you go the left, as you face the water, towards Poipu beach. There's a rock pile there that cuts a little cove off from the main beach, where most of the people go int he water and a low concrete wall that you can stand on to keep your footing.

I know on Oahu and Maui throwing big plugs and spoons on the beach at night produces nice Jack Crevalle. Never been to Kaui, just cruised by on the way to the missle range. Have fun !!
