View Full Version : R.I. Fishing Report
Guyfish 04-15-2002, 05:45 AM I went fly fishing Sun. 4/14 at Charlestown Breachway( salt pond area)I fished the high tide& not a hit. Then I went to the west wall & it was a little windy so I was using my spinning rod¬ a hit. I talked to a couple of guys out there & no luck for them either. Then an older fellow told me that the Narrow River in Narragansett has been good. So I went there & fished the out going tide& not a hit. Oh well at least I learned about a new spot(Narrow River) I'll just have to try again. Of all the places I was that day I did'nt see any bait fish or sand ells. Is the water temp. still to cold, or just an off day?
JohnR 04-15-2002, 07:34 AM Guyfish - it's just early and inconsistent. The Wall has been fair this year according to some regulars that have fished it a lot but it can still be tough. Things will surely pick up with a week of HOT weather and these spots get consistent at the end of April beginning of May - it's only mid-April right now.
STRIPER77 04-15-2002, 08:21 PM MAY 1st seems to be a good beginning around these parts. But I'm going this weekend (and if I could I would have gone last too) because fresh air and salt breeze is good for you!!!:D
nightfighter 04-16-2002, 10:33 AM Got to the West Wall around 1430 on Sunday. managed to land about ten twinkies just before the bend on the right. Nice place! I had a lady with me from Pawtucket who was content to take in the sun, and didn't complain til the breeze had completely chilled her. She was a good sport considering this was our first time meeting up.
Got back to my van and had Clammer's card on my windshield! Was that you Mike with a younger guy in the boots that I passed on the way out? Sorry we didn't hook up.
One local was really helpful. (He also hooked up on his first cast so I was paying attention to what he was using, torpedo/egg lead head with 2 1/2" chartreuse rubber and two shrimp teasers ahead.) He had two doubles that I saw. You guys were right on about jigs and size, bucktails. Interestingly, I had much better success when I got rid of my leader that had a clip and a barrel and went to my loop to loop standby.
Got a MUCH needed fix and can't wait for the saltheart AllStar, especially after seeing the fore mentioned local flinging his Loomis. The new Okuma Metaloid TDS reel was a dream!
Saltheart, after looking over the local's Loomis, I am thinking that I might be going a bit too short on the butt length I gave you. Probably would go to the mid range you suggested, ie. 20"
What do you think? call me if you can 617 529 7035 cell
Hit Lincoln Park on the way home and did some more catch and release
:smash: :smash:
Cant wait for Cuttyhunk!!!!

Glad you had fun////////////////////
Saltheart 04-16-2002, 02:52 PM OK Nightfighter , I'll call.
My guess is the guy with the two shrimp teasers was Dave Pickering. He would be a good one to watch.
Nobody is using a rod like you are getting out there on the wall. Mostly 6.5 to 9 foot spinners. Some short conventionals like Smokey's 7 footer too but mostly very light spinners with like 8 or 10 lb test line.
JohnR 04-16-2002, 04:01 PM Agreed on the Dave Pickering being the fellow with the shrimp teasers - supposedly the "Thing" at the wall this year. Dave, Steve, & another regular showed them to me but I don't know where they were getting them. The only thing I will say that is on the 2 days I've been there, nothing has beaten the Cocahoe and white bucktail :)
jeffsod 04-17-2002, 01:00 PM Just hit my first schoolie/twinke on my lunch break. I was getting short hits for a while and thought maybe white perch with too small a mouth so I switched from the zoom fluke to a couple other lures and the one fish caught was on a small yo-zuri black silver. Lots of bait around like small minnows not sure type and shrimp. Where you ask? In a broad cove off the taunton river.
Scotch Bonnet 04-17-2002, 06:49 PM Hit the west wall on 4/17. fished from 6-7 pm, dead low tide and a lite SW wind. Only 2 rats and it was tough up & down the wall. Pretty bad diesel slick along the rocks - not too cool!
maine/rifisherman 04-19-2002, 05:25 AM I went to godard park area on 4/13 and took a couple casts before a major line tangle ended my day. No bites but saw lots of seagulls out a ways gobbling up something so i thought it was probably baitfish they were feeding on.
bloocrab 04-19-2002, 08:31 AM ..hey Jeff, watch out for dem' Tautog in that there river.....;)
