View Full Version : Pull start & battery 4 electrics
Krispy 04-06-2006, 08:12 AM Hi folks,
can you add a battery to a pull-rope motor, not to start it but just to run electronics? Do pull start motors come equipped with a battery charging system?
Thanks,
Krispy
RIROCKHOUND 04-06-2006, 08:15 AM Krispy;
I have a pull start Yahmaha 25 on my 13ft whaler...
A battery runs my bilge pump (in the water all the time not trailered)
Off that I run my fish-finder as well..
Usually I need to charge it 1-2x a summer using a seperate charger
You could also wire lights etc.. off it, I just use battery powered lights, not 12v.
MakoMike 04-06-2006, 08:17 AM Usually, pull start motors don't have alternators built in. You could add one and the necessary wiring.
Krispy 04-06-2006, 08:21 AM wow, that was quick :hee:
TT, what type of battery are u using? Small deep cycle? I could handle 2 charges a season.
Thanks for noting the option of adding an alt. MM, I need power in there somehow
tynan19 04-06-2006, 08:52 AM My brother ran his lights, fishfinder, bilge pump, trolling motor and livewell all on a deep cycle marine battery. He needed to charge it more often but it worked well. Just get a battery charger and hook it up to the battery. It isn't to much work.
RIROCKHOUND 04-06-2006, 09:01 AM TT?
Wrong dude Krispy... guess you got your tin boat?
I think it's a deep cycle, if not dual purpose will last a while...
those trolling motors suck a serious amount of amps, so they will kill it fast...
PM me if you want details on what I use for lights etc..
I've got my whaler pretty tricked out for what I use it for...
Krispy 04-06-2006, 09:13 AM I dont know why I keep getting confused, to much :smash:
Just want to run a fishfinder, and a serious effin' bait tank.
Lights are battery operated, and the boats trailered, so a hand bilge will due
I local guy bought a Quintrex, was pretty much giving away his tinny. 14' Starcraft Seafarer, 20hp Evinrude and trailer, all 1989. He only used it for duck hunting a few times a winter, OG owner :hee:
RIROCKHOUND 04-06-2006, 09:27 AM Plan on re-charging more often... also, you can make a self-contained fishfinder batt set... you can wire 2 6v lantern batts in series and run that off one and the bait tank off the other...
ProfessorM 04-06-2006, 09:39 AM Deep cycle battery works fine. That is all I have used for years in my tin boat. Just recharge every couple times. P.
Flaptail 04-06-2006, 10:25 AM Krispy old man, I have a 2001 Nissan 18hp electric start with built in pull in case the battery fails. I love the system, less worries. I run a deep cycle 12volt Marine battery and the engine has a built in charging system to boot. I run a Humminbird off of it and this year lights. Three years now ( I bought it as a leftover, new in box in 2003)
and not one problem. It's a two stroke cause in a small boat you need good response when you got to pull a hole shot to get out of a ferry's way in Woods Hole Channel at night. 4 strokes don't do that as well.:wavey:
Team Rock On 04-06-2006, 03:18 PM You could always install a cheap solar powered battery charger in the boat.
TheSpecialist 04-06-2006, 04:40 PM Some outboards that are tiller operated, and pull start also have alternators. You need to look up the brand, year and hp to find out if it has an alternator. I have an 84 30 HP Mariner on a 16' tin that has a pull start, and an alternator as well cause the motor has an option for electric start.
Sluggoslinger 04-06-2006, 06:15 PM I ran my GPS, Cabin lights, Nav lights and occasionally other accessories off one deep cycle battery in my sailboat last summer and didn't have to charge it until the fall. Its even easier if you're trailering all summer. Putting a alternator on that motor would be ALLOT of money for a motor that isn't worth that much to begin with. My 2c
