View Full Version : Polarized Sunglasses
Motor Fish 04-10-2006, 10:25 PM Can anyone recommend a good pair of moderately priced polarized sunglasses ($50 - $100)? I hate to spend a lot of money on sunglasses as I have a bad habit of wrecking / losing them, but I don't want to get junk either. Any advice appreciated.
Thanks!

5 String Bass 04-10-2006, 10:31 PM I get mine at Walmart (shhhh, dont tell anyone- lol) . they have them for something like 7 - 15 bucks. They probably don't look as good as a 100 dollar pair, but they work. BTW - I kill sunglasses constantly... I would be SO pissed at myself for sitting on 100 dollar sunglasses, I'd kick my own ass.
MakoMike 04-11-2006, 07:04 AM Watever you get make sure that they are 1) polarized and 2) block 100% of the UV rays.

Get em at West Marine.. good deal and have a full lifetime warranty
slapshot 04-11-2006, 08:04 AM You can check thes glasses to see if they are polarized with 2 pairs. Polarization cancells light waves in one plane. So if you hold one pair in front of the other and rotate one of the pairs 90 degrees, you should not be able to see anything through the glasses. If they say "polarized", and that trick does not work, don't buy them.
I also buy the cheap throw aways. I have ruined too many good pairs.
Steve K 04-11-2006, 09:25 AM What are you using them for ie. offshore, inshore, flats, etc..? Buying cheap glasses is a big mistake. Most are optically distorted and might not fully block UV rays. I like glass lenses too.
Slick Moedee 04-11-2006, 10:10 AM Does the color of the polorized lenses make a differece? For instance, grey, amber, blue etc.?
I have a nice pair from EMS that cost me around $40. They are EMS brand.
piemma 04-11-2006, 10:24 AM You will never find this guy, but I'm driving in North Smithfield last Saturday on Rt102 and there's a guy on the side of the road with a truck and a big sign that says "Polarized Sunglasses". So I stopped because I had lost my last pair chasing my stupid dog thru the woods.
Anyway, their Forster Grants and they and they still ahve the tags and labels on them. $5 bucks a pair 5 for $20. I bought 5 pair and they are great.....
westhavendave 04-11-2006, 10:27 AM Chilis EyeGear brand run 20 to 30 if you can find them. I get them at north Cove in Old Saybrook CT. Sierra trading post has had some good deals on Bolle and Hobie recently, some with glass lenses.
Little Round 04-11-2006, 12:03 PM CAMPMOR had the best price on sunglasses.
You can get real high end glasses for $20 to $100.
I got pair of revo's for $80 last year.(retailed at $280)
YOu need to go into the website and look under Hot deals or something like that.
zimmy 04-11-2006, 12:04 PM I wear smiths right now, but my next pair will most likely be Natives. Good lenses, but I absolutely love the frames. Fit perfect and are light. Lifetime guarentee. Even if you break em just send a piece in and they replace em. Reasonable price. Definately at least try em out. Also, ll bean carries some nice glasses including smiths and their warranty is great.

Don't know how much difference the color makes but grey is the easiest on your eyes. Amber if ya like feelin spaced out. :hihi:
basswipe 04-11-2006, 06:06 PM If you're truly looking for awesomely low prices on brandname sunglasses check out a Campmor catalog or look at the website.

tynan19 04-11-2006, 07:59 PM Ebay usually has Costa Del Mars for around a 100. Work great too.
Slammer223 04-11-2006, 08:14 PM Calcutta makes a decent pair for around $20.Not great but decent.

Just got those:)
Uncle Matt 04-12-2006, 10:35 PM I wear glasses anyways, so I get the Wiley X brand through my eye doctor. I order the lenses in my prescription and also get them polarized. A little on the expensive side buy I figure I'm worth it. My current pair is 4 years old and should be replaced.
JohnR 04-13-2006, 07:36 AM I liked my Natives but they break frequently - not made for being, err, rugged. Cheap repair / replacement warranty is well needed. They work great.
I REALLY miss my Costa Del Mar Hammerheads and I'm still looking for some of these super durable, large squash intended, glasses. Pretty crisp view and can beat the daylights out of them. Unfortunately the version I had is no longer made and the new Hammerheads are a little different...
The nice thing about lens color - go to Costa Del Mar's website and check out the frame colors tailored for different conditions and find what might be best for you...
Parapapam 04-13-2006, 12:26 PM Guys, Costa Del Mar's (not the 500 series, but they are pretty good!) for $69...

RIROCKHOUND 04-13-2006, 12:43 PM Really?

Unfortunately yes - in fact mine are going back in... Seriously, they are great glasses and Native has the best return / warranty program going, but my style glasses are very, uhh, delicate...
If they did not break so easily in MY CLUMSY HANDS they would be perfect. The interchangeable lenses are great. They just could not terlate the abuse I got out of my Costas
Finaddict 04-13-2006, 02:33 PM Amber lenses are good for seeing contour in the water, shallow water. If you were going to fish the flats for bonefish, permit, tarpon, etc., you'd want the amber lenses because they show up the contrast really well. The grey lenses are used a lot by the offshore guys because they block a lot of light, but not as good for situations that require contrast. But ultimately it does come down to a personal preference. Whether you buy an expensive pair or not, such as Maui Jims - I like the Ocean Waves -- you can test the two different colors. But they can be expensive. Another good option for a very good price are the fly fisherman sunglasses. i think they retail for under $30 and are pretty popular. Pat Sheldon is the owner, he is a decent guy, their Web site is: http://www.flyingfisherman.com/2002/home8.02.html.
JohnR 04-14-2006, 01:32 PM On a sad note, I went into a sunglass shop yesterday and made the mistake of tying on some Costa Del Mars with the Wave 580 Glass lenses. I say sad, because these things were so good and so crystal clear (actually crisper than my keen eagle eyesight) I'm gonna need to drop another $100 over existing budget if I want one of these puppies... Scary how incredible these glasses are... :smash:

I wear my sunglasses at night...
especially on the full moon.
Pt.JudeJoe 04-15-2006, 08:13 AM I look very cool in my Maui Jims, but it's time to start looking for a new pair, as gravity had wounded these a bit . I'm glad you guys have this thread up. S-B rocks!
tattoobob 04-15-2006, 09:13 AM Ihave had the same pair of Raybans for 15 yrs. or so
I have been looking at the Costa Del Mar Havana's
I just don't want to spend $220.00 just yet
In The Surf 04-15-2006, 11:09 AM Love the Revo H2O's for the water but I trashed one pair fishing, don't want to do that again.
backbeach 04-15-2006, 11:30 AM For inexpensive polarized glasses, I find the Flying Fisherman series hard to beat. Don't forget to pick up a pair of clear shooting style glasses for flyfishing at night to protect your eyes from errant clouser minnows....

Those Havanas with the Wave 580 are absolutely sick! Those glasses have the crispest view by far that I have ever seen...
tattoobob 04-15-2006, 01:47 PM John those are the best on the market today. I have to go with the Wave 400 due to the price. I have to have good sun glasses because I get mad head aches from the sun, I had glaucoma and now sense the operation the sun really affects me.
Hey Bob, i've got the solution for you - :smokin: :smokin: :smokin:
I guess you would stil need sunglasses, although for diferent reasons.
All joking aside. I am fully addicted to the costa wave 580s
tattoobob 04-15-2006, 06:12 PM I was only smoking a once and a half a week :bl2:
